Everyone is going to be panicking like hell in Boston thinking it's a terrorist attack. Of course when everyone's calmed down they will come to the conclusion that it was probably a gas explosion so something like that.

 

Some people seem to think there were bombs in the bins, and others have said one explosion came from inside a hotel.

 

Terrible, I'm watching on Sky News. Fox News reporting a minimum of three deaths so far.

 

Well no one really has any idea how this happened. The timing of the explosions just doesn't make sense for them to be bombs.

 

Eh. Finishing line of a very popular marathon on a Boston holiday so the streets will be full of people off work. Makes sense to me.

 

Police are now being ordered to immediately evacuate the surrounding hotels and carry out searches.

 

Reports also saying that it might have come from within a sporting goods store.

 

I'm thinking of 3 hours earlier when the marathon front runners were just finishing. The streets would have been packed. Surely that would have been the best time for maximum impact.

 

People listening to scanners are saying that a 'suspicious device' was found at/outside one, though in such situations, everything is suspicious.

 

Lisa McCormick of the BBC:

Oh ****. But at least most people will have been evacuated.

 

Yeah but you could put that down to a human error in detonating the bombs or maybe a techincal error in the bombs themselves. I agree with Mr Nice, the fact the explosions happened on the same day and in the same place as the marathon is very suspicious. Heart goes out to the family of the people who were injured/died.

 

I'm definitely watching the 10pm news tonight.

 

These things often don't go exactly as planned. Most terrorists aren't exactly demolitions experts and their homemade explosives often go off early or late or not at all.

Plus, they are (hypothetically) humans. They'd may rather have the blood of tens rather than thousands on their hands - would make a big impact either way, clearly.

 

True but if that's the case the people responsible would have been amateurs. If it is terrorist attack, it is bloody lucky the bomb didn't go off 3 hours earlier because hundreds of people would now be dead. It is still a horrible situation, but it could have been a hell of a lot worse.

 

Don't buy that sorry. Terrorists want to have the maximum impact. I've studied the impacts of terrorism in my degree and any scumbag who wants to detonate a bomb wants to kill as many as possible.

 

Most terrorists are amateurs are they not? Very few have any bomb expertise and the ones who carry out the attacks are usually very low down the ranks in there organisation.
