Harry Redknapp admit he may struggle with transfer sales

Harry Redknapp has admitted that he may struggle to offload his highly paid players in the summer if the club are relegated.

QPR’s plight looks increasingly desperate after the defeat to Everton at the weekend leaves them ten points adrift from safety with just five games left to play.

Redknapp has a group of highly paid stars at the club, especially those bought in January, and he believes the R’s will struggle to offload them if they are relegated.

Redknapp questioned the ability of his players following the defeat on Saturday: “You say [they are] talented players but are they that talented?’ I don’t know really.

“You have some experienced players but what you need is a good group of characters, a good group of people together and you have not got any problems when you have that.

“They won’t go. How are you going to get rid of them? That’s your biggest problem. They all have contracts. I wish you were right, and you could say [the players would leave] but it ain’t going to happen here.

“How are they going to go? Who is going to pay them what they are earning here? It is going to be very hard to shift them. It is not a case of players wanting to leave suddenly.”

Redknapp: If we f***ing played better, we'd stay up
    ESPN staff
    April 15, 2013

Harry Redknapp has finally cracked as Queens Park Rangers head for the Premier League trapdoor, questioning the players who have failed to lift the club out of relegation trouble.

Redknapp fears QPR will be unable to offload the highly paid stars who have stacked up on their books through the tenures of former boss Mark Hughes and Redknapp himself.

QPR have won only five of the former Tottenham manager's 23 games in charge, one of those coming in the FA Cup.

"You say [they are] talented players but are they that talented?' I don't know really," Redknapp said in the wake of Saturday's 2-0 defeat at Everton that, coupled with results elsewhere over the weekend, left the club ten points adrift of safety with only 15 available.

"You have some experienced players but what you need is a good group of characters, a good group of people together and you have not got any problems when you have that.

"They won't go. How are you going to get rid of them? That's your biggest problem. They all have contracts. I wish you were right, and you could say [the players would leave] but it ain't going to happen here.

"How are they going to go? Who is going to pay them what they are earning here? It is going to be very hard to shift them. It is not a case of players wanting to leave suddenly.

"I hear that all the time that if they get relegated they want to go because they don't want to play in the Championship, but if they f*****g played better, then they would not be in the Championship so that's a load of cobblers."

One player he does expect to be snapped up is striker Loic Remy after five goals in eight appearances.

He also hit out at the club's disciplinary record since they returned to the Premier League, with Stephane Mbia left out of the squad on Saturday to avoid picking up a two-match ban for 10 yellow cards.

QPR have received 12 red cards in less than two seasons - with the next worst in the division, Arsenal and Manchester City, receiving eight. But the 108 yellow cards they have picked up is around the average among all teams to have played both seasons.

"If you look at QPR's record over the last two years they have probably had more players sent off than anyone else in history. That's lack of discipline," Redknapp said. "We got done last week by Wigan through lack of discipline. We have a man sent off and then give a free-kick away four minutes in to injury time.

"We started the second half here sloppy, giving free-kicks away, silly fouls, kicking the ball away when they have a free-kick, getting a booking twice."

Redknapp also would not be drawn on his future at Loftus Road, despite previously claiming he would love to stay in charge and owner Tony Fernandes stating his desire to keep his manager in place.

"I don't know the financial situation of the club at all," he added. "Only the chairman would know. I've not spoken to anyone about my position, to be honest. I've not even thought about it."

Figure of speach I guess. But it's your native language not mine :)

Tried to say something along these lines on the "More Tony Tweets" thread. TF sounds naive when he says he is going "clean up", I'm afraid as Harry says it's not that easy.

Spot on! And if Tony is going to clear that mess up it would have to be out of his own/investors pockets.

That is just Harry's vernacular English. I would not read too much into that.

Have we really spent all that money on a basic **** or bust approach with no contingency for bust?

If that's really the case, how did TF and the Mittals ever make it in the first place - and what's Phil Beard there for? Seems too juvenile to be true. Doesn't bear thinking about.

Does any of the blame lie at Harry's own door, how come he couldn't motivate the players to perform better? Surely that is one of his chief characteristics and either he hasn't applied himself properly to the job or he's lost it.

I have to wonder what Harry is trying to achieve here?

We may be down but if indeed we are lumbered with players that cannot or will not leave for whatever reason, what good will come of lambasting them like this?

It looks like it may get messy in which case NPC for 3 to 5 years I suppose.

Good news in many ways as the autopsy starts ... Harold will now protect himself or this is a final rally cry either way good management IMO ... Win/Win for Harold. I do not agree re the money .. TF and the board sold each of them the ambition ... that is till going to happen IMO. I believe the whole thing is scripted to some extent he needs a last effort here plus he saves face. On the other hand you take all the above quotes and why not go the whole hog ... The club is finished and the team needs a complete rebuild using some of Flyer's kids in effect we try another idea like Villa. I hope i am right here and the game Saturday will say everything that words cannot ... seriously there could be a riot

    Totally agree RTID.

I understand that Harry is frustrated at the team performance, but he ought to be careful with what he's saying here and taking a little responsibility himself wouldn't go amiss either. If we're going to have a group of well paid and experienced players on our books for the Championship next season then we should be looking to get the best out of them, getting them to prove their supposed quality, not just publicly slag them off and further marginalize them.

After all, they may be on good wages but surely that's not the only thing important to them. What about their careers?

We've got more chance of shifting them in the NPC, wed have had an even better chance if we put relegation wage clauses in their contracts. Whoever chose not to include those should be sacked.

Its going to be an interesting summer with ins & outs & probably ever other day something will be on about us, harry's the manager & now we should see his wheeling dealing skills during the transfer window, he's here & now its his problem.

A lot of attention will be on us ... That's the way it's designed to .. Imaz has a good grounding re an opinion on our owners IMO ... we will become the team everyone wants to fail ... Barton, TF try and count how many times we have been in the news this season now we have Harold

Consider this for 2013/2014 Fyler will cream himself :

Team to play against Barnsley away opening game:

    Mothalwhite aged 14 in goal

Derkin Perkins Saddlebags Thompson (all from Crewe's youth team all aged 15)

Crabtree Scrumper Tanner Ferrier (All from Suffolk college for boys)

    Bradley-Wright-Phillips ConnorWickham

    Manager: George Whitebread

Back to basics ... Back to the future

That was exactly my thoughts. Although I agree with much of what he is saying, I am not convinced saying it publicly is a very good idea. It certainly will not enhance the players values when we want rid.

The FA need to intervene with situations like this to avoid a repeat of Portsmouth.

I'd suggest the FA would enforce a rule to state that any player part of a relegated team in England must have his pay revised to one which is accommodated by the club's budget for that year. The player would automatically have the right to have a transfer request accepted by the club as well. There'd obviously be some small print in there with a load of clauses and stipulations etc but that would be the meaty part.

Club doesn't lose, player doesn't get forced to stay on lower wages.
