Paolo Di Canio has revealed that his daughters have suffered abuse because of the fascist row that dominated his appointment as Sunderland’s new head coach.

The Italian also described club owner Ellis Short and chief executive Margaret Byrne as his “bodyguards” within the “hostile environment” he has faced since he succeeded Martin O’Neill.

“I will thank them for the rest of my life because what we had was not a normal change of management,” Di Canio said. “The first few days were absolute madness for this club.”

That madness will be ratcheted up on Sunday with the Tyne-Wear derby at St James’s Park although Di Canio claimed he has received messages of support from other managers, including Newcastle United's Alan Pardew.

The 44-year-old said that his eldest daughter, Ludovica, who is a student, and his younger daughter, Lucrezia, who is still at school, had been targeted because of his *apparent political beliefs.

“I was sad for the club, and obviously for my family, especially for my daughters,” Di Canio said. “The oldest one goes to Southampton University and people were knocking on her door. I don’t know how they found out where she lived.

“My little one, who is 15, goes to a British school in Rome, in the school someone... [said something to her]. It is for them that I feel sad. I couldn’t understand how it caused a problem for them.”

The row has led to Northumbria Police warning Newcastle fans not to taunt Di Canio with fascist salutes.

Di Canio praised the support he has received from the Sunderland board and, in particular Short and Byrne.

“I am in good hands. They are my bodyguards,” he said.

“What I found here is unique. They were amazing. It was crucial for me working in a hostile environment. But they were straight. They said: ‘We know who we know and we know Paolo Di Canio also and we will defend him.’”

Di Canio’s target is to remain in the Premier League and he agreed that Sunderland need three wins from their final six matches.

If Sunderland were to win today then Pardew acknowledged that it would drag Newcastle – currently five points better off than their rivals – back into the relegation battle. “If we lose to Sunderland, we could still go down,” the Newcastle manager said.

This is the sad reality of what the ?British scum press can do to completely innocent people who get caught up in their little grubby feeding frenzy.

I wonder if any of them plan to offer their support for PDC's family and his young daughters. What do you think they make of polite British society now eh? You'd think their father was a wanted war criminal or something.

Pleased to hear Maggie and Ellis offered him their full support as relationships upstairs are just as important as those downstairs.

Only right the employers should defend their employee.
Well done Short and Byrne. <ok>

Same as when Billy Bragg was cheering on Di Canio the player when he was at WH.
Now he is at SAFC he is fair game for this ignorant bandwagon jumper.

MR - Billy Bragg is a talentless work shy, dole claiming ****ing nobody who tried to latch on to this latest nothing story to sell some records to fill his supposed Commie pockets. He hasn't worked a day in friggin life but has conned his time impersonating a musician for 30 years and trying to sound like a street dude. He's just a disingenuous fake.

He has written one decent tune in his whole life but it took anothers talented voice to make it actually sound good; he simply can't sing and his other songs are utter tuneless garbage.

I wouldn't worry about this hypocritical ****wits ramblings at all.

We'll lift his spirits when we play our first home game next week. I fear the travelling army will be drowned out today unless we get an early goal, but next week he'll see what support he has.
