Yet another article singing our praises: http://www.independent.co.uk/sport/...t-farsighted-southampton-saviour-8570688.html
If we eventually reach major success, I want Cortese stood on the centre circle doing a Sinatra impression.
Enjoyed reading it...though they have called him Mauricio Cortese! My only small gripe is that they said Saints fans quickly regained their respect for Nicola...most fans were horrified by what happened, but were careful not to direct anger directly at Cortese...we know where our bread is buttered. I think most of us were willing to wait and see as NC had earnt our trust. And we certainly were going to give Mauricio time...it was in our interest to hope for his success. They showed common sense by not making a big fuss about MP's entrance and it didn't take us many minutes of the game to realise that we liked what we were seeing.
I like the comparison to Borussia Dortmund. Champions League semi finalists? It can't happen, can it?
Cortese seems far too cold and distant for me to actually warm to. Yes, he's made some good decisions whilst he's been here, and equally, some very bad/annoying decisions, but yeah - just how I feel about him.
He said recently that he doesn't mind sacrificing popularity for the good of Saints...what you need in a Chairman.
Small things I don't agree with, such as banning the newspapers, pay for parking (inc Staff), high price increases, timing of Adkins/Pardew sackings (not the actual sackings I might add, just the timings), constantly changing kits, numerous failed transfer bids once the player got to SMS & met the staff (Jemal, Ward, Gorkks) Yes, there are good decisions as well - I'm not all negative when it comes to our esteemed leader.
Not just that, but "very bad". I suppose we can call the photographer incident a bad decision, but that was quickly sorted out.
You said "very bad" and then "small things", which is it? Either way, I'll break this up. Banning newspapers - assuming you mean photographers, that was a bit bad but not a huge deal. Pay for parking - I'm not convinced it is for staff, but come on, hardly a huge deal. Price increases - holy ****, things got more expensive as we got to the Premier League! Most chairmen would never do that! Timing of sackings - how do you think they could have been timed better?! Changing kits - a business decision, obviously, every single club does it, and not a bad one anyway - nobody's forcing you to buy them, and a lot of people love the current kit. Jemal, Ward and Gorkks - oh no, what a shame we didn't sign any of those Premier League regulars, and failed transfer bids never happened. So that's either petty, relatively insignificant things, or not real negatives.
Oh well, you do realise you're the only one who suffers for your outlook. By the way, what are the bad decisions..? EDIT: Thanks Dan. As to the article, whilst I generally agreed with it [bloody hell, Mauricio Cortese..?] I thought they'd got it wrong where it suggested that Saints fans had turned against the chairman. If that were true then we all must have way below average individual IQ levels, because nobody but the most ignorant idiot would actually become mutinous. Upset and unsure, yes, but we very quickly got on with getting our heads back together, while the rest of the UK supporters and media continued to reel at some imagined sporting earthquake. This upward spiral towards further success doesn't surprise me anymore. A complete about turn in the club's fortunes have seen to that. Nowadays, I just tingle with utter delight at what has gone before and, more importantly, what is just waiting over the horizon.
With the exception of Gollivan, Whelan and to a lesser extent, Kenwright who all seem to court publicity, I think you'd be hard pushed to find a Chairman who does enjoy the limelight. Surely that makes it tough to warm to any of them in the traditional sense. You can only judge based on their actions and relative success. On that basis, we are undoubtedly amongst the luckiest of fans in the country aren't we? TSS may tingle about the future; I get a semi!
The timings of the sackings seem now to be spot on. The numerous kits happens all the time with every club. The failed transfers didn't happen because they aren't right. They are good decisions if you ask me. Gorkks? Close escape.
I feel I would be dishonouring my Latvian ancestry if I didn't point out that it's spelt "Gorkss". And yeah, don't really want him now.
