BBC reporting that the Premier League, meeting today, have agreed that goal-line technology will be used next season. HawkEye have been awarded the contract. What do people think about this? Personally, it's about time. I am also glad to see that HawkEye have been awarded the contract and look forward to seeing it in action next season. Although, it's sod's law that there will be no incidents next season at all... DTLW
Great decision. Presumably with the backing of UEFA and FIFA. Anyone know if other countries are trying it?
BBC Sport's Richard Conway: BBC Sport has learned that the Premier League meeting in London has passed goal-line technology for use next season, with British-based Hawk-Eye awarded the contract. The FA will also install a system at Wembley Stadium in time for the Community Shield in August. A raft of financial regulations have also been ratified by the 20 clubs.
Damn . Posted on the Beef thread . Great news IMHO . IF GLT is to be used , glad it has gone to a British company !
I know one of the people who invented HawkEye - he plays at my local tennis club so pleased with this news.
Apparently one of the guys behind it went to my secondary school. There's a massive noticeboard in the Maths corridor about it.
can you imagine 30 odd thousand people waiting for the result to be shown on the big screen, how can that not add excitement. Both tennis and cricket is more exciting with hawkeye and football will be the same
The result won't be shown on the big screen. The ref is notified within one second if the ball has crossed the line or not in which case he'll either give the goal or signal for play to continue.
Martyn Ziegler - Chief Reporter for Press Association Sport: "Premier League confirm that Hawkeye's goal-line technology replays will be shown on TV and almost certainly at stadiums."
I'm assuming this will be after-the-fact though, once the decision has been made, unlike in cricket and tennis where it is shown simultaneously to the crowd and umpire.
Yes - because if it's not a goal then the game would carry on. He just means that the replays will be generated in the same kind of way as they are in tennis.
Indeed, I was just referring to BILAB talking about the excitement of seeing the replays, because as you say you will already know it's a goal because the referee will have signaled, so there won't be the same tension there is in tennis and cricket where the spectators see the HawkEye live whilst the decision is being made.
Yeah that won't happen, and neither will big flashing lights and fireworks go off when the ball goes in the net, because it can't tell when the goal is disallowed for a foul/offside/whatever. Basically it's hardly ever going to happen and it will be boring.
Haha indeed, I can't wait for the fanfare when it's actually used for a contentious decision for the first time, I'm guessing it will be February 2014.
