What he means is.....I am going to raise season ticket prices, try not to notice that they will be the most expensive in league 1.....A statement about playing in Europe will probably come next.
Bloody Scally, I spend hours on end argueing with people who support premiership teams, about how Sky and the Prem are killing football and I am glad we are not a top tier side in this country. The git will probably get us there and I will have to eat my words when Arsenal come to visit!
Premiership, no thanks. I don't want us to be in the Premiership as it is the billionaires playground and if you don't have a billionaire then you have financial problems which I don't want. I would be happy with Championship football at the most.
I really think he has got caught up in the euphoria........a Championship side at the very best.......but we will still be in the heartland of real football teams as opposed to the overpaid, theatrical 'plastic' teams that abound and dominate the airwaves. Real football, real team and real fans.......not just on the good days!!!
Completely agree with this....Watching the interview I was interested in his comment that he has never sacked a manager, which got me thinking Jemson, Cooper and Hess (the first time) left the job mid season, and Hess definitely stepped down, they also stated that we have had 12 managers, but we have only had 8 permanent managers in Scallys time, Pulis, Taylor, Hess, Cooper, Jemson, Stimson, Hess (again) and Allen, the 12 would include Ternant who was on a short term contract, and Hare, Gorman and Onuora who were all caretakers (Hare and Gorman for 1 game each). Now Pulis was sacked I don't think that is really up for debate, Taylor left at the end of his contract Cooper, Jemson and Stimson all departed whilst under contract but did they fall on their swords? I am not convinced but I cannot recall the exact circumstances but they all went because results were not good enough as did Hess at the end of last season.
In all seriousness I think we could within the next 10 or so get into the top flight! I may sound like I've been on the promotion Champagne for a tad too long but Paul Scally talk about a potential new stadium excites me and with our large catchment area (the whole of kent) if we have a nice 20-25 thousand seater stadium very similar to the AMEX in brighton which I was very impressed with when we went their in the League Cup last season. Last time we were in the Championship Paul Scally did make a big effort to get us into the Premier League and I think we are very capable to at least reach the championship within the next 3 years (if not next year with back to backs!). Maybe I am also caught up in the promotion atmosphere but would you have seen swansea in the premier league even 5 years ago?
Every time the Premier League is mentioned it just crosses political boundaries for me. I hate it pure and simple. Time for its departing now Thatcher has gone.
Never say never, lots of teams have come from where we are and done it, admitedly there are some horror shows of teams over spending and having real problems but like Scally said, if you follow the Swansea model they have shown it can be done, without the billionaires, without the debt. Swans play some lovely football, a real pleasure to watch, I would take a few years of being known as 'Britains Barca!'
Imagine the away trips! - and the European football - nice to dream. But I'm with BRB on this I hate the prem and all it stands for.
My main objection of the Premier League centres around the huge proportion of Television money that is thrown at this league. It has helped to fund some clubs that might not otherwise survived in that division whilst the clubs in the lower & non leagues are left with scraps - but then I suppose the same applies to other leagues around the world. I will admit to being jealous about the billionaire owners of some of the clubs -you can't blame the players or supporters for that - just our bad luck that Mr. Scally is not super rich. However - let's not really kid ourselves - if Gillingham could do a Wigan, Hull, Reading or Blackpool - I would challenge any Gillingham supporter to tell me ( with total honesty ) that they would not want the chance to at least experience the chance of gracing our top division.
I see a 18,000 all seater stadium filled with a load of plastics, with the redwing coaches parked outside waiting to take them all home < shudder > < cold > < no heart > Still we could 'always' find the new version of the GRS within the new stadium for us grumpy old men to be sitting there snarling at them.
History suggests our level is a decent Division 1 team. Lets be honest Championship is a bit rich for us and we will always struggle. Back where we belong as far as I'm concerned. Any other talk is pie in the sky.
