no I'm sure there was a story we'd made a bid and that we'd also denied making a bid. Anyway my point was that we had Torres/Aguero to choose from and we chose the wrong one.
Wasn't Aguero holding out for a Real move in the summer that season? Definitely remember seeing a quote from him at the start of this season saying that he spent all of summer 2011 waiting for Real to make an offer and then had no choice but to go to City when Real didn't get involved.
I may be getting my windows confused, but wasn't that the jan when we apparently did a double bid for Aguero and a centre half (Godin?). It would make sense as on the last day we got Luiz and Torres. Hindsight is of course a wonderful thing. In fact we should have got Torres instead of Sheva to bring it all full circle!!
Isn't there an unwritten agreement that the Madrid clubs don't go for each other's players though? Certainly wouldn't be the first time city got a player that wanted to go somewhere else *cough* Robinho.
not sure mate but I do remember reading in the guardian him making noises about being open to a move to a few clubs including Chelsea. He was an atletico player so moving to Real would've been a bad move which is why I think he chose City. That was my impression. That's the one! I'm happy with Luiz, still think he's good and can be better but obviously Torres was a massive mistake.
I think Luiz has been and is our best centre half by a country mile now. He's cutting out the errors and offers a lot going forward too. Torres like Sheva before just goes to show, if you're going to take a punt on an out of form/unfit player; at least don't pay top dollar for him. United paid decent money for RVP but he'd just come off the back of the best 18 months of his career. Torres had just had his worst 18 months arguably when we signed him. But if we say we paid 58 million for Torres AND Ba, it doesn't seem quite so bad!!
Pretty sure the essence of that agreement is that they won't unsettle the other teams players - if a player is likely to be on their way and the subject of existing interest then they'll go in for them. Real will probably be in for Falcao this summer as he'll likely to be leaving due to interest from Chelsea and City, but not for Costa as no one else has made a move yet. City met Aguero's buy out clause, so the agreement wouldn't have applied in that case. You may be right - pretty sure the quote I read was after Real beat City this season, so maybe that was a question of looking at where he might have ended up had he been open to the move. Tho' there was definitely transfer chat in May about him wanting to stay in Spain and refusing to enter into discussions with Utd and Chelsea until he'd seen if Spanish sides would be interested. Here they are: http://www.goal.com/en-gb/news/3277...ster-city-target-sergio-aguero-i-would-prefer http://metro.co.uk/2011/05/07/sergi...ster-united-and-chelsea-transfer-offers-3306/
Yeah but 'goal' and the metro are hardly the best sources. But tbf I did hear rumours of him going to Real too around that time.
True, but they do at least have genuine quotes from him. If I had more time to waste I could probably Google up the same quotes in the Telegraph or Guardian. I'll just get Sisu to do it
