Growing up i was anti Tory , anti thatcher and for some reason pro Labour .
Then when i grew up and was better suited to making my own mind up i respected her and the hard work she put in as an MP and later PM .
She did her best for Britain when it was in a right mess , had Michael Foot got a grasp of Power what would Britain be now ?

What would Europe be for that matter :/.
    RIP the Iron Lady !

As I've said many times I don't give a **** about politics so don't know what she did or why people love her or hate her. I think it's a sad time when anyone dies and those that are happy are sick twisted individuals. The only time it's good someone dies is if they're and evil **** like bin laden or saddam hussein and its embarrassing to e British when our own people are happy that someone who devoted their life to standing up and representing the nation has died. Truly shameful, she deserves every British persons respect.

    Rust in peace iron lady

That's probably the best posting I've seen so far. You should have said late 70s, early 80's though. It was all really grim. Living in the shadow of the threat from the USSR plus all the other crap we endured.

Didn"t she go on an incredibly lucrative "lecture tour" of the USA.Same for Blair and will be same for Cameron. It could be perceived as bribery in arrears if you play ball with the Yanks.
Mark Thatcher seemed as thick as pigshit yet ended up stinking rich-yeh Mrs Thatch did a great job for those she really cared about.
Mind you Scargill was an even bigger dickhead imo

Blair, Brown and Cameron could only dream of being the driven politician and leader she was.

Got things done, not always for the best, but eggs had to be broken to make omlettes.

The 70's were horrible. Power cuts, 3 day weeks, nobody had **** all. Social deprivation, mass unemployment and the unions squeezing the life out of the countries industries.

She changed alot of that in her time at Number 10, but as with all postions of power, it had to end and not in a good way.

I really wasn't a fan and still aren't, but she definitely left the country in a better state than she found it and got Britain its self respect back.

She wanted to **** about with football and almost killed the game after Hillsborough and Heysel - id cards, pulling England out of World Cups etc.

Bit of a bitch all in all, but the country needed her at the time. The alternative would have been unthinkable - Geraghty and Brady and their ilk would have you believe otherwise and we know what years of a labour / union lead council has done to progress this city.

She was lucky the Falklands War came round when it did to keep her in office the 2nd time round. Poll Tax was the nail in the coffin though, awful idea.

That and obviously losing the Cabinet with the added pressure from Heseltine.

She certainly put the country back on it's feet and brought the self respect of the country back. Before she came to power, we were a laughing stock aboard and she put UK back on the world map as a country that was to be respected and open for business. RIP Maggie.

I don't think that there's much in the way of morals in celebrating anyone's death, regardless of who they are or what they've done - its not very civil and betrays a certain lack of character. Of course, I wouldn't begrudge my Gramps toasting Hitler's demise or Iraqis having a party when Saddam was executed (or Bush in a decade or two) but then, as OLM said, Thatcher wasn't a genocidal maniac.

I also don't think there's much point in moralising against those who do celebrate, because most people who are hypocrites - I imagine most dyed-in-the-wool Tories who are angry with those gloating over Thatcher's death had a chuckle when Saddam was hung, when Gaddafi got a knife up his bum, when UbL got his, when Michael Foot popped his clogs, etc, etc. I can just imagine the gloating when George Galloway kicks the bucket, for instance.

Even if you're on the left and disliked the woman, you can afford your enemy a dignified exit from life...

As for her policies, well they may have gotten us out of the frying pan for 25-30 years, but now we're right back in the fire. Neoliberalism and its policies of deregulation and privatisation - and of course, the incredibly short-sighted policy of facilitating the economic rise of the an additional 2.5 billion would-be bourgeois consumers in India and China - has ran its course. I know there's an argument to be had for reducing the state now because of our exhausted public coffers, but its mainly because Thatcher (and Reagan et al) restructured Western economies to be service-driven. We went from post-industrial malaise to post-services malaise. There's no invisible hand - that was the dogma of the Thatcherites and it has been unequivocally proved wrong.
