I think you missed my point.

I said if you're able to pick up Humberside coverage then you should be at the game.

Obviously I meant you'd have to be in our fine county of Humberside, I wasn't including the internet.

Aren't radio commentaries meant mainly for those who are either working, housebound or who in a recession can't afford to get to matches. BBC local radio is as I said a strange beast. If you are for example in Cheshire - you have Stoke in the south of the county, Manchester in the north east of the county and merseyside in the north west of the region.

Ideally what they need to do is rename and rebrand the station as BBC radio Hull (it happened with GMR being turned back into Manchester, GM being Greater Manchester)

They would if they could Mostyn. However, the folks in North Lincs wouldn't have a BBC service, which they are entitled too under the terms of the BBC's Royal Charter. For purely technical/transmission reasons, they are tied to 'Humberside' rather BBC Lincolnshire. Some research was carried out a few years back and the N.Lincs listeners didn't like the idea of 'a BBC Radio Hull' one bit.

I know it's a long shot but were they ever asked if they would prefer BBC Radio Lincolnshire for instance?

In a nutshell he basically said Alex Bruce is uncriticisable, it's outragous that anyone can criticise him, the people who do criticise him are just looking for a boo boy nothing else and that they're disgusting, and he was proper wound up about it. Then went on to heap utmost praise on him for everything he did as if he's the heir to the throne, and when he made a mistake and let a boro player walk right past him and through on goal (how it sounded from the commentary) went quiet as a mouse.

Maybe do a little research before talking **** Burnsy, everyone but Erik thinks he's been pretty damn solid at the back, but he shouldn't be playing in midfield ahead of proper midfielders.

    Hi Mussie

Yes they were. From memory, and I'd have to check back on it to be honest, but I am fairly sure it was roughly about 60-40 on remaining with Humberside.

Care to elaborate on the sample size and demographic of this "survey"? Not saying yours is, but I seem to recall a similar claim turned out to statistical nonsense.

Are you sure it wasn't a BBC survey, ie those who already listen and enjoy in blind faith?

When I find it DMD I'd be happy to. I'm not home at the moment. I remember coming across it when doing some research on BBC Local Radio audiences for an academic paper. It was some time back (2003) so how relevant it is now is of course always debatable. It was an internal BBC document (not a RAJAR document) and so the sample size would have been in line with standard population surveys i.e. sampling/age/ethnicity etc.

As an aside, where I live (just 7 miles from Lincoln) I can just receive Humberside on DAB/FM and AM obviously great for the city games I can't get to. I wouldn't want a change if it was being offered, as the signal power would be reduced! Obviously, most of the most of the folks in North Lincs can also receive BBC Lincolnshire. I am also almost sure that Charlie Partridge (Manager-editor at BBC R Lincs) once confirmed to me that the survey had been taken since and it was confirmed again about the listener balance. I'll get back to you if you're interested? Given the whinging by Scunny and Grimsby fans on RH and not least the lack of calls on the sports programmes I find that odd to be honest.

Where I agree with Mussie and others is that given that BBC Radio in Lincs takes its regional news from Nottingham, but its telly news from Hull, it doesn't make sense re the sports coverage. BBC Lincs covers the IMPS and 30 miles south of Lincoln, the Pilgrims, so I don't know why they can't cover Scunthorpe. My impression when I worked for BBC Lincs was that they didn't see Scunthorpe/Grimsby at 'proper Lincolnshire'. Never understood that attitude at all...

See my response to DMD, that will hopefully answer the question. They sample across the board and not just the 'blind faith' as you put it. However, surely the blind faithful are very relevant as they choose to listen and have a choice of Lincs or Humbs. RAJAR does this too and they represent the whole of the radio industry not the BBC.

If you do find it, I'd be grateful if you could post a version up so I could have a look. It sounds pretty much like the one someone referred to in the past, and to be honest my recollection is that it didn't support the claim at all due to bias in the sample set, but I'll still read it with an open mind.

To be honest DMD, it wasn't particularly useful for my paper so I just filed it away. That may have well been the reason. The stuff in the annual report is next to useless. I'll find it and would be happy to mail it to you. I'll speak to Charlie Partridge tomorrow and see if I can get the most up to date figures/attitudes. Since they got rid of local radio listener panels, it's got much harder to access quality research other than that published by RAJAR. I might add that the 'internal' BBC research is conducted by an independent polling body.

Cheers. Don't go to any great lengths though. I'll find it interesting, but it's clear that the BBC seem to have their own agenda on regions which doesn't seem interested in the views of local people. I recall when I've looked into it before several other areas of the Country complain of similar high handed and disrespectful attitudes from the regional beeb. Kent and Cornwall spring to mind for some reason.

BBC Radio Humberside has a big city abrasiveness that contrasts with the understated gentleness of BBC Radio Lincolnshire – a characteristic in keeping with Lincolnshire people.

    • The distinctive Hull accent markedly differs from Lincolnshire and many Yellowbellies find it excruciatingly tiresome.

    Brilliant.
