So, lots of people have been asking why Hot spends so much time on the wing, and then in another thread someone mentioned how yesterday Kamara spent lots of time on the wing too. So leads me to two thoughts. Either that is how they are being told to play because of tactics, or is the problem Hoolahan? Now don't get me wrong Hoolahan on his days is brilliant but playing in the hole this season we have seen a poor return on goals from him or the strikers. I also wonder if he is not playing effectivley as a provider in that postion so forcing our strikers to the wing to try and get involved. Happy for others to disagree, not sure I believe it's all myself yet!
People complain if there is no movement up front and then again if there is. Part of the striker's role is to draw the CBs out of position to make chances for others coming into the box.
It's a problem but it was a problem under lambert as well. People were constantly moaning at Holt for going wide and not being in the box. If your a lone striker a big part of your job is to hold the ball up and create space. As the furthest man forward when a ball goes to the flanks you can't just leave it. You have to chase it and have a go at trying to work it.
The trouble is Hoolahan was brilliant in the hole when there were two men in front of him, because he was able to take the best of two options given that he usually looks for the killer ball. With only one in front of him, he only has one option. Holt drifts wide because it's a good way of making space by stretching the defence. It's only frustrating when there are no other options going forward (like here...)
