I agree with Staines regarding Cash's cover of "Hurt". I also like Metallica's covers of "Whiskey In The Jar" and The Anti-Nowhere League's "So What". Whitesnake's "Ain't No Love In The Heart Of The City" is a particular favourite of mine, as is The Stranglers doing "All Day And All Of The Night". I love Ray Davies and The Kinks, so quite enjoy their songs enduring... The Jam: David Watts Van Halen: You Really Got Me and Where Have All The Good Times Gone Kirsty MacColl (God rest her soul): Days Pretenders: Stop Your Sobbing and I Go To Sleep Roller's assertion that the Beatles are the most covered artists is most likely correct, but the Kinks can't be that far behind if the link below is anything to go by. http://www.kindakinks.net/kovers-list.html
That is a very impressive list Uber. According to Wikipedia (so it must be true!) Yesterday has more than 2,200 cover versions. I find that absolutely staggering. I'd struggle to name more than 5! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yesterday
Yes, I'd heard it was the probably the most covered song ever.... Not a favourite of mine, though. I liked the Beatles and the Stones, but was more a fan of the Kinks. I think I rather liked their Britishness.
Agree Billy's version is better. Chumbawamba 's version of The World Turned Upside Down is quite good though.
Really strange one this, but its really good, Pulp's Common People by (really, this is true) William Shatner and Joe Jackson.
Respect Adeva Step on Happy Mondays Helter Skelter Siouxsie & the Banshees XTC also covered Watchtower
Hurt- Johnny Cash, originally Nine inch nails. Running up that hill- Placebo, Kate bush, Smooth Criminal- Alien Ant Farm, MJ
George Harrison's cover/ copy of 'He's so fine' Nobody, and I mean nobody, does Dylan - any Dylan - the equal of Dylan.
I love all of these cover versions. A great song or tune will always transcend all musical styles and still stand up and hold it's own. All along the watchtower - Jimi Hendrix Piece of my heart - Janis Joplin Feeling good - Muse Hurt - Johnny Cash The man who sold the world - Nirvana Twist and Shout - The Beatles Jolene - The White Stripes Knockin' on heavens door - Guns 'n' Roses Live and let die - Guns 'n' Roses Police and thieves - The Clash Dear Prudence - Siouxsie & the Banshees Step on - Happy Mondays Why Can't We Live Together - Sade Caravan of Love - The Housemartins My Way - Sid Vicious
John I'm only dancing (Bowie) by the Polecats ... what a catchy little tune Scissor Sisters Comfortably Numb for my spandex nights ... Hot Dog Sausages for tea boys
"Under the Boardwalk" - Rolling Stones (original by The Drifters) "You better move on" - Rolling Stones (Arthur Alexander)
this is probably the greatest cover version of all time , not easy to improve on the Beatles
So many great cover songs mentioned here already but let me add few more: Manfred's Manns Earth Band: Spirits in the Night Manfred's Manns Earth Band: Blinded by the Light Nazareth : Love Hurts Hanoi Rocks : Up Around the Bend Sammy Hagar : Young Girl Blues Tom Jones (Robbie Williams) : Are you gonna go my Way Ann Wilson : Immigrant Song
IMO there as never been a better cover version of an original, need I say more than American Pie by Madonna. What a pile of pooh! Ditto films. For example the American version of 'The Italian Job' & Sylvester Stallone in 'Get Carter'
