For the first time as a Charlton fan I will be disappointed to the situation we find ourselves next season. The season winning League 1 was the first season I have witnessed as a season ticket holder where we have not fallen so far below our expected outcome. Players who played during that season contracts are running out, so this coming Summer will be the first time I will be upset when players leave. Yes, we have had good players leave us in the past such as Nicky Bailey and Sam Sodje two players I enjoyed watching and thought were good at the level they played at. But next season we will see some of the League 1 Championship winning season squad depart. Players such as Danny Hollands and Bradley Wright-Phillips many of us would expect to leave the club at the end of the season. Now this is the first time I will be sad to see players leave as I have grown attached to them during our successful period and I for one will be very sad to see them leave.
For me, if he goes, I'll be most sad to see Wagstaff go, Charlton through and through and always gives 100% effort
This will be a big summer for the club with a lot of potential comings and goings. As sad it will be see to see players like Wright-Phillips go following what they did for the club last season, I think it is right for any progression of the team that such players are moved on. I was always skeptical of BWP's ability to score goals in the Championship and although some suggest he may have not been given a fair crack this season, it was almost unanimous among Charlton fans I spoke with last season that Brad needed three chances to score a goal. With better defenses and the drying up of chances in this league, I am not surprised that his goals have dried up also. I too would be sad to see Waggy go, at the risk of coming across as a massive 'name drop' on only my second ever post on here I once played against him in a Kent Cup Match for my school team at the age of 17. We lost the match 7-1 with Wagstaff scoring 6.....he was playing two years above his own age group!!
tempus fugit..... players come and go..... we agree with some and disagree with some.... but that is the way of things. Most of us would not have released Kyel Reid when the good doctor did but Kyel has hardly set L2 alight has he?
If Wagstaff goes I go. He's bound to be a one that got away - like a Michael Turner or a Mark DeBolla.
Some good points but a couple of bizarre names chosen here: While I thought wildman Sam Sodje was "amusing" at centre-back, he hardly leaps to mind as being one of the best "good players" who have left us, even if we only consider recent years. As it is the Kish, I assume his subtle humour is at work here coupling 5 million rated Turner, who has played regularly in the Premiership with Hull, with Sunderland and (still) with Norwich. with DeBolla who went on to the heights of Croydon and Sittingbourne. Letting Turner go for small change was madness and I have never seen any explanation. Same for S hittu and Primus. All were progressing nicely for their age and on course to be first-team fixtures.
Not really. Lisbie was patchy in the Premiership, Wagstaff patchy in the third tier. Lisbie is still a better footballer at 34 than Wagstaff who should be approaching his peak (as witness our League Cup match with Orient and their respective achievements in Div One this season).
Yes, it is easy to overlook the sometimes unpopular decisions the Good Doctor has got right. Who else has justified CP's lack of faith? Hayes has done nothing since leaving, for one.
The reason we let Michael Turner leave is because we were in the Premiership and we were well served at Centre half.Primus and ****tu I thought wouldn't make it.Hindsight is a wonderful commodity to have. You are always going to let players go at youth level and for them to come back to haunt you.It happens at all clubs.
When I was younger I always wanted baked beans for eyes. Of course now I realise that would have been just awful. Still, that's Heinz-sight for you. (The Kish 2011 TM)
