Rodgers compares himself to Shankly

Discussion in 'Manchester United' started by Christiansmith, Apr 5, 2013.

  1. ...and I see that as a good thing!

(and no, I'm not saying you don't before you accuse me of being 'prickly' again <doh>)

  2. Well, I guess that would depend on MFG lending me his time machine <laugh>

Well you're his target audience & he's sucked you in, so he's hitting the mark in terms of his dumbing down of expectations amongst his own fanbase <ok>

  4. So because I agree that he should be given time and I agree that he should be attempting to keep expectations down (since we all know how Liverpool fans like to get carried away) I am "being sucked in" am I...? <doh>

PS...I've not read the article, I am going by what has been said in this thread!

    Yes, you are.

The man has spent over £40M this season & yet he constantly makes out that he's "working within budgets" & trying to convince everyone that instead of being merely AN other football manager, he's somehow creating something that is extraordinary & will take years to get to the point where it actually achieves anything. He's full of **** mate, he's a great self publicist though ;)

  6. He is full of ****e at times but that does not change the fact that he needs to be given time and the club needs to stick by their manager after the recent years of sacking guys!

I didn't say he deserved the boot mate. Someone at your club needs to sit him down & tell him that he needs to stop talking up the 'long game' & the time to start delivering is now like.

    #27
  8. But the time to start delivering isn't now. Sure, we'd like to see it but in reality this is his first year at the club and the season is pretty much a lost cause. Now is an opportunity to find out about some of the squad players in readiness for the summer transfer activities and preparation for next season.

As for BR, as long as he starts to show respect to the opposition and shuts up about bloody second (<doh>) he can talk **** all he wants <ok>

Sorry I should have quantified what I meant there, by now, I meant next season, as obviously this season is about done & you're going to finish around where you are now, so he's not going to be able to deliver anything now this season.

I'll ask my reporter mate to have a word with him if you want <ok>

  11. So, despite me not entirely agreeing with him saying these things in the public eye, you think I've been sucked in because I agree with the principles of what he is saying? (not that he is the new shanks though <laugh>)

No, not what I meant. I didn't agree with him dumbing down expectation THIS season from the off, he took over a side that finished 8th & got to 2 cup finals, he spent another £20M last summer & yet he made out he'd taken over a club that was on it's knees, he should have had a greater level of expectation put on him, he got off lightly imo.

It's refreshing a sensible football dialogue going on about LFC between a red and a BS on the united forum, with no mancs getting annoyed <laugh>

    Give it time!

On point though, he has to deliver something other than nonsensical little speeches next season, that's just the way of football today.

He's had a season to bed in, the squad play his football, he's blown some cash on some ****e players and now next season he will have to be closer to top four and challenging for something beyond January.

Or he'll start getting stick (deservedly), simple as that.

  16. Fair enough, we had crossed wires <ok>

Still don't agree mind. If you base it on the owners sacking Kenny after those achievement meaning they had higher expectations (obviously they did) then yes, but I think last years expectations where too high anyway. I do agree that spending that sort of money we should have done more but thats a previous regime, BR's not spent anywhere near as much. He spent more in January and we have done better since. I'm not a BR fan but nor am I a hater.

Given that they'd allowed him to spend £120M in 18 months, I don't think 4th was asking too much personally. Maybe the sacking was a bit harsh given the cup runs, but they expected CL to be the minimum requirement given the investment.

I think Rodgers side is better to watch, but I'm not sure that it's much more effective.

Personally, I think his side will frustrate the hell out of reds next season, as I still think you'll be inconsistent, as I think his set will always leave you prone to conceding cheap goals.

I think we need to see what happens this summer before making predictions about next season. A lot depends on who comes in and who's shipped out..........................

    ......................and Suarez <yikes>

His system will still be the same, irrespective of the personnel mate, that was my point really, as I think it's fundamentally flawed.

As for Suarez he's been great this season, but he wasn't all that last season with 11 league goals.

As & when he moves on, you'll survive without him.

Is it the system that's flawed or (some of) the players he has playing it? I know we'll survive without Suarez, because we would require a massive fee to even countenance it, but I love watching him play. He's so unpredictable.
