I don't post on here much.

I do notice that Swords' often outrageous posts can be good for a laugh. What has he done now ?

Seems a shame to keep banning the entertainment and lifeblood of the site. Same with Cerny/Secret.

Surely we can all live with occasionally being called a c**t or similar. Or presumably it was something even more appalling.

As I see a OT debate took place last year? about the dreadful Jimmy Saville episode . In that debate or similar Cerny as I understand it made a comment to the effect that he had experienced or knew of the pain associated with such awful stuff.

Swords some how turned that into a comment about Cerny's father with the flippant term kiddy fiddler banded around once

A stand off and threats were made

No one was brave enough to take a punch and stand down and Swords
got a ban.

I totally agree re your comments as we don't know each others parents and most would realise that and see the comment for what it was a leg pull
In context . There has been a history between them with direct threats made to Swords ... That history should be stamped out IMO as a big chill pull taken

Swords was banned because he broke the rules we all agreed to. The fact that others have broken them goes without punishment is because some people can let things slide without problem ... In this case a complaint was made and the mods did a good trying to resolve it ... Maybe if Swords had put in a counter claim then anyone involved would be banned also
Seems fair to me but Swords is bigger IMO and I hope he used the rules to his defence when he returns

If he is rubbished while away then I would comment back on his behalf if you care too as you have fine so on this thread ... The attackers will reveal themselves to all and in time should be ashamed to hit a bloke who can't reply
Some people don't like Swords or me that's perfectly fine the way I see it

I am commenting on the reasons why this came about that's all and I can't remember the thread ... If I have time of course I will look back however a flippant remark made seemed to be made here based on something unless Swords invented a pretty poor insult on your family ... Really bad if he did that but I would prefer to look at the reasons why direct comments like that we're made along with a series of threats ... Both of you have history but to threaten someone is very low IMO

I am sticking up for Swords as he has always been a good poster IMO and is now banned and serving his time honourably for offending you He can't answer or have a voice so why not let it rest ... I love the wit and vibrancy that Swords brings to this board but I am siding with SR on this one.

With or without any truth (I've no interest in prying), Swords said something that could hurt someone. Not just petty name calling either.

It's easy to say laugh it off if it doesn't offend to the very core.

Simple as that really. He can be big enough to back down and apologise to anyone else but SR (despite this being a blatantly obvious outcome).

He knew what was coming.

Secret, just so you know, this site is based abroad so the UK libel laws won't apply (especially on a non-UK citizen anyway) but you gave Swordsy ample time to retract and he couldn't back down (presumably on some principle).

OK. That's my lot on the matter.

 

If that is true (and your father is still alive) more libellous than that it's hard to get.

Of course the mods have correctly taken the only option open to them by deleting the offending posts and thus by law protected 606. However the libel towards both your father and possibly yourself would seem to remain. As for damages they would probably be minimal but the costs whoever they may fall upon would be heavy, very heavy.

An out of Court Settlement is often considered in the circumstances. £15K or £20K sound reasonable?

My sympathies to you and your family.

Just speaking from experience as to what happened on a UK newspaper's site.

This thread is getting close to the line!

 

Our rules reflect our users' wishes in terms of our interactions with each other.

However, just because we have rules, doesn't imply the existence of or need for, CCTV monitoring every post on every thread. We all agree we don't want BBC style over-modding. Consequently we mods don't go looking for issues, we simply respond to formal complaints PM'd to us. We then consider whether or not the complaint is valid. We do this by looking at both the rules and the evidence of breach (usually easy since all posts are recorded). If its upheld we then decide the appropriate course of action.

This case was a bit different in that allegations were made based on what Swords maintained that Secret Ranger had said in an earlier thread. Secret Ranger denied saying such things and challenged Swords to produce the evidence or apologise. Swords did neither and Secret Ranger made a formal complaint. We had little choice other than to offer Swords the same terms. Again Swords did neither.

We then considered the action, taking into account Swords' recent and past conduct record. We agreed that a two week ban was reasonable in this instance.

DT (commendable summary) makes the point that Swords never complains and that is true. If he did, his complaint(s) would be processed in the same way as every other one is.

This might be the internet but it's also a community of real people (at least for the most part). The Swords/Secret Ranger case once again highlights the need for self-moderation and the need to show due respect for each other in our interactions.

NB - For those interested, we've now concluded our review of our moderation lines coming out of the recent consultation process. I'll be posting the findings later today or tomorrow. Apologies for the delay.

 

The important thing is to preserve the continuity of the site. Posters come and go, the site does not.

 

I posted the thread then had to go to out. I have just logged on and fear I may have started WW3. I guess I would be pretty pissed if anyone suggested any of my family were *****s (except old uncle Henry, who loved you to sit on his lap).
