I had glandular fever in 2003, very nasty.

Felt ill around Christmas time with flu after a week or so felt a bit better but after another 2 weeks felt crap GP prescribed anti-biotics and felt better. Had recurring illnesses through the spring including a very bad voice for 8 weeks.

In July I moved house, went on holiday when I came home I was very ill my neck glands were so inflamed my neck was wider than my ears and my skin was starting to show a hint of yellow.

GP took bloods and told me if I felt worse to phone up out of hours service (this was on a friday)

Felt much worse on Saturday, GP refused to come out to me even though I was feverish and unable to turn my head so had to get a taxi to an out of hours centre (£10) she looked at me and had me admitted to the hospital (another taxi £10)

I then spent 2 weeks in hospital on steroid drips. As the epstein barr virus is relatively closely related to the hepatitis virus it affects your liver in a similar way.

I've never really fully recovered from it I suffer from ME/CFS/PVFS whichever you want to call it plus fibromyalgia which is essentially constant unrelenting pain in most of your joints. I'm currently on Pregablin which is an anti-seizure drug which has helped a lot but it's all bleeding edge stuff there's no treatment for any of this.

In short there is a VERY specific test for GF which needs to be done NONE of the normal tests will show it up except they will show up other things like liver chemistry being out of whack.

If you've got it then rest rest rest rest rest if you push yourself you will do yourself long term irreversible damage. Then when you're recovering you need to take it slowly do NOT go back to work quickly i'd say plan on recovery taking a minimum of 6-18 months if you're LUCKY, having said that some people get it and recover very quickly but if you plan for the worst....

Having said all of that its more likely than not you have a simple viral infection but good luck with it

    Are you serious?

Sometimes things are best left unsaid. Incredible! How insensitive can you get?

I'm glad I didn't mention my Uncle dying from a minor strain of glandular fever now.

No worries bud. I'm sure you're just run down with a common viral infection it's really common this time of the year. Best thing for that is to try to get as much sunshine (when there is some) on bare skin to regenerate your body's levels of vitamin D.

Let us know how you get on

Jesus, I started to feel sorry for you, then noticed you're a Norwich fan. Obviously an act of God.

[seriously, I know the post was well intentioned, but as Nines said....]

**** me and I reply to a question with my experiences of it and I get nothing but **** and to be honest your reply is bang out of order. Serious illnesses transcend football and using that to have a pop at someone I hope you're really proud of yourself!

ME lighten up you are the one having a go at me, ffs. I've PM'd one of your mods to delete the lot don't worry about it. You know I genuinely wanted to help with the GF thing as I didn't have support when I had it, I knew nothing about it and I was rushed back to work which wrecked my health and i'd hate that to happen to someone else. I also qualified my post by saying odds are you haven't got it.

I just don't get the hatred but such is life.

All the best with your struggles with CFS. My lady has it and so I have some appreciation of what you're going through.

We're having a bad night and hoping the best for Staines that's all.

    Again, best wishes,

    Matt

I think we ALL need to chill. Rich44's post was obviously in good faith and answered a question I asked.
For that I'm very grateful to him (as I am to you all).
As has been said by many, it is hopefully just a nasty strain of virus ( Twin 2 is very rough and we had to change his PJ's twice last last night 'cos he was sweating so much and as I started typing this he projectile puked everywhere).
The problem we have nowadays is we are told to self diagnose a lot if the time through NHS direct, and while the symptoms I've got might be very similar to GF, hopefully it ain't that severe.

As I said pure luck it's Oncologists visit today so hopefully she might have some answers. Once again I'm very grateful to you ALL for letting me know your personal experiences.

For what its worth...Twin 2 symptoms are not GF like, therefore I think you all do not have it
    But get checked out...

PS cute names for your kids...bit Dr Seuss-like.
What is the name of the other twin????...

No doubt in my mind that Rich44s comments were posted in good faith. Some of the info may seem a little OTT to some of us but Staines seemed to appreciate the info. That's all that matters as far as I'm concerned

Good you are seeing the oncologist, mention the symptoms to her.

If you are having night sweats and/or night time itching that should be mentioned, she should ask you that question anyway.

    99.9% probably only a virus.

Just a note to say thanks guys (and girl) for your support and advice.
Spoke to my lovely Doc today who says, in her opinion, it isn't GF, and is just a nasty virus. Twin 2 is still spewing up like a Friday night drunk but our GP says he will be ok and has given him some nice orange flavour antibiotics to sort him out. To top it all, my oncology Doc also told me my PSA level has gone down as well so all ok till my next test in July.

Once again, thanks to you all.
