Boy, am I glad that it's not just me.

I've been putting my money where my mouth is all season, saying we are staying up, ending top ten and finishing ahead of West Ham with my wallet. There is no way we're going down. We're 5 points clear (inc goal difference) and we're playing with belief. This is the mindset that, used from the start of next season, will have us top seven.

The only time my money's gone the other way was when we reached very long odds to be relegated when I had my usual "pay for next season's ST for £50 bet if everything goes wrong" that I always have when the odds get a bit long.

In case anyone's interested, Betfair's odds imply that we have about a 4% chance of relegation (3.8% accurately). Those implied chances are determined using people's MONEY rather than just wild opinion, so they tend to be a realistic reflection of the chances of something happening (lots of academic research backs this up). It'd be nice to see people beginning to enjoy the fact that we're extremely unlikely to go down.

    Vin

I decided we wouldn't be relegated a few matches before Mauricio arrived...we started to get the points our general play deserved, whereas a few other clubs looked like they had no idea what they were doing. As I watched the Everton game, I became certain.

For example, QPR this evening. They were extremely passionate, but actually pretty damn clueless as well. Zero intelligent movement from anyone other than Remy. Not that Fulham were any great shakes. Berbatov stood out, head and shoulders.

I'm with you. I did cringe. I have never believed strongly enough that we were ever going down so I can't say I've felt the required amount of relief that would compel me to sing it. It may be naivety on my part I don't know but I believe staying up is not a success it's just a step towards it.

This thread is getting boring now as people are starting to agree. The handbags bit in the middle provided the laughs!

On topic, though, I too was stunned by the Simpsons scarf. Have people no shame? :)

(For American readers this is called .. oh forget it, if you don't get it you don't get it)

No, but a better team will catch you out, for all the style and skill in your side.

I decided before the season began that we would stay up, and I haven't doubted it whatsoever since. That's not over-optimism, I really do, and have always, thought we have far too good a squad, and playing style, to get relegated.

A better team, like yourselves? Tell me, how many wins did you get off us this season?

Hey. No need to bite. It was an observation. Play another team like you did against QPR and you could come unstuck.

Oh if people are going to start feeling embarrassed about what football fans have done at moments of joy and relief, then we are probably all going to feel a bit sheepish. How do you think Pompey fans feel when the bell ringer is broadcast to the nation?
It's one thing to feel that way watching the telly, but I would suggest that few actually at the match found that chant at all cringeworthy at the time.

I have heard that plenty of them would rather he put that bloody bell down than have it clanking away all game. :)

It is one of the small number of situations where it's acceptable to cry:

    1. A parent dies.
    2. You get dumped.
    3. A pet dies.
    4. Your team gets relegated.
