I think we're approaching the point when the reason there's a no politics rule exists.

It's tricky. If someone involved in football seems to have strong political views then arguably it's fair game for discussion. I' not aware he's using his position to promote his politics, which is more than can be said for Ferdinand.

I'll leave this open for a few more replies, but I'm hovering over the LOCK option.

No, if Sunderland wish to employ him, that is their right. What I am saying is that the views that he holds make him the person that he is. This has been shown by his previous behaviour. He is in a position where he could be moulding young lives, including players from differing ethnic backgrounds.

But if he does mould players from ethnic backgrounds, which in effect he's compelled to do so by law, what relevance would his politics be if his actions at work don't reflect peoples perceptions of them?

What are you suggesting should happen?

I did, Ive always disliked him. It used to make me larf when he was consistently named one of the best Prem players ever yet he never won a single senior Italian cap.

No need for an apology at all. It didn't come across like that, I was just making sure I wasn't misunderstood in my OP <ok>

That's really interesting to me. Leaving the Di Canio case aside completely for a minute, if I found out one of our players or management team had something completely odious about them, then I don't want them at my club no matter how good they are. Marlon King is the perfect example here, he was our best striker across our 2 Premier League seasons. Would I have him back? Never in a million years.

I wonder how any 'Palestinians in Sunderland' feel about the EDL/SDL fascists attempting to stop fellow Muslims building a Mosque in Sunderland? Whilst you digest that one, check out Hansard and both the Miliband's support for Islamic causes and their anti-Zionist stance?

You are right about one thing though let's leave it there...we'll get nowhere with this.

Before this goes to lockdown DMD can I point out to Lincoln and the hysteric anti-fascists on here that Mussolini wasn't particularly anti-semitic, one of his mistresses, Margherita Sarfatti was Jewish and some of his government were Jews in the decades before WW2, it was the German Nazis that added anti-semitism to the Italian Fascist model which was more economic based, ie corporatist, than racial.

I'd say the difference with King is that his actions were immoral and illegal. There is no dispute his actions were odious. With political belief, merely holding a legal political opinion is neither. Acting on an extreme view could be odious to you, but it would be the legal element that could be the only true guide in my opinion.

But he's served his time and there's nothing illegal about playing him. Clearly some other clubs are prepared to look beyond his past indiscretions, but I'd hope we wouldn't.

No, but he's shown on several occasions he's not capable of living within the rules of society and that he has no remorse for his actions.

I fear the clock is ticking on this one and you have chosen to get in another point, I'm sure I'll be allowed the right to reply.

I can't speak for the locals in Sunderland and the new mosque although the 671 letters of objection and a 1,462-signature-strong petition about potential parking and noise problems seems to suggest that the proposal has not been met with universal enthusiasm. It's odd that people with leftish sympathies support the spread of the muslim faith with its sexist tenets and anti democratic ideals. I'll leave you to ponder that one.

Ditto David's curious hypocrisy on the Iraq question given his alleged support for Islamic causes (your words).

(I wonder if is training to become a trapeze artist in New York?- he's had some good experience of balancing acts).

    Up the Tigers.

A previous poster on this thread seems to suggest that a manager has a duty to be a role model.

Whilst this is admirably idealistic, in reality very few footballers or managers could do this.

And ones who are also good managers are even fewer in number!

My personal view is that some people put far too much store in politics and politicians. Even ones under the same banner disagree on some fundamental concepts and, in my experience, their principles play second fiddle to staying on board with the real power brokers, who are rarely, if ever, politicians.

It's ONE thread that you're free not to read. As several users of the board are discussing what is loosely football related, I'm letting it run for now.
