O/T Brighton Fans

There has just been a report on BBC Breakfast about Brighton fans putting in a complaint to the FA about homophobic chants. It showed a game against Forest were they were chanting 'does your boyfriend know you're here' and they have compiled a list of all the away grounds they have been to where that has been sang at them. That's us on the list then.

Bit pathetic if you ask me. Most their fans join in with the 'we can see you holding hands' chants. It's friendly banter!!

 

Is that a regular chant clubs do to each other or just one directed at them?

It's just one directed at them Elle but it's not meant in a nasty way and most their fans join in with it and then give as much back. Maybe we should complain at being called a town full of smackheads.....

I saw the piece on the BBC and it implied that the chants you mention above were very often taken as a bit of good fun and banter. It crossed the line when there was a chant that referred to them catching AID's, which I agree is a step to far.

 

Is this not an April Fools....?

 

i do understand the reasons for the chant , but it would be totally wrong to call it homophobic .
the chant is not aimed at the sterotype gay , it is aimed at the very slight sterotype of someone from Brighton .
So the correct term and crime would be Brightonphobia or something similar .

in other words the chant isnt
"we sing this coz you are gay"
but
"we sing this coz you are from Brighton"

 

It's also implying that theres something wrong with being gay and its worthy of ridicule, which is homophobic.

Fans wouldn't sing it if they didn't think it would be an insult or offensive.

I see where your coming from but the majority of dicks that sing things like that are not doing for the reasons you've suggested.

Elle, Brighton is a bit of an odd place, big gay community, massive Green Party support (Green Party run council) and it is famed for its antique shops.
Nothing wrong except that it is also one of the hotspot areas for drugs and drug related crime. It is less than an hours drive from south London and used to be a major holiday resort. Now the hotels are fewer and London based councils placed all of their problem families there. The levels of homelessness are very high. Begging is a major problem as is the sex industry. It is a seedy **** hole.
The football crowd does not reflect the population and in general the chants have been accepted in good humour. But as soon as the new stadium became the place to go to on a Saturday, after years spent playing out of town, the support has become more middle class green and dare I say gay.
The best chant, " you're so Southern you're practically French" was met with real howls of laughter by the Seagulls. Gay chants just get a shrug.

 

It could be argued that the old stadium (just over the original boundary) in Hove was nearer to town than is Falmer.

There is something wrong with being gay, it's not normal, but that belief in itself isn't homophobia. Homophobia is actively hating gays and/or taking actions against them because you don't like them.

It's not homophobic to acknowledge it's not normal and they're a bit batty, if you have no problem with them.

I'm not sure if I'm a homophobe or not, I don't mind people being gay, but when they dress up like girls and talk like ***gots I can't stand that.

The Amex is one step up from the KC, every seat is padded??? It is now fashionable to support team in Brighton. I didn't make the last game. I can drive to Hull quicker than getting back on a Saturday night from Brighton ( it took 5 hours last time on the train). But some of the blokes who where on the train back into town where definitely ott gay. It wasn't just one or two but perhaps twenty or thirty, all cooing over the players, sureal that's for sure.

 

I saw it and I think most of the stuff that is chanted is banter though I do agree the bit about aids is over the top and going a bit too far. If I was a Brighton fan I don't think I would complain though it is just going to spoil football altogether if people are frightened to open their mouths.

Sorry, but you are homophobic.... In the world we live in now being gay is seen as as normal as being straight. I do not agree with that view, but that's the way it is. Offending people is nearly as big a crime as stealimg from them. It's ****ing creepy.
