Wish it were that simple. The morality of a politician who was mre than willing to prop up his pet dictators and arm them while in power, could not see why he should take the blame for being part of a labour government that embraced Thatcherism as socilaism and who throws his toys out of the pram because he is beaten to the leadership by his kid brother having taken his eye off the ball. He had resigned as MP of South Shields the week before to take up a well paid job in New York as head of an American charity. Cheap publicity stunt and no more than that

Total rubbish. "performed for 2,000 years"... FFS, staggering stupidity.

Are you Italian? What do you know about Italian Fascism and its racism?

Apart from the concentration camps, Risiera di San Sabba for starters, the Racial Laws, the use of Chemical weapons on Africa, "faccetta nera" and much, much more.

My late in laws lived through the racial laws in an Italian Somalia from 1938 until the British arrived in 1941 (and then on until 1969). They were very lucky to survive.

Di Canio is fascist filth, UK government should have deported him years ago.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Augustus_of_Prima_Porta#Portrait An early roman salute. Staggering really.

Mussolini's fascism was racist. It would take a holocaust denying prick to deny that. My point is that salute predates modern fascism.

You do know Churchill agreed to chemical weapons testing on 'uncivilised peoples' as well don't you? He believed in white supremacy too. Maybe we should have got rid of him and stuck with Chamberlain.

Fascist erection accompanied by a snarling expression. Politics of peace and harmony anyone? Hardly.

Peace and harmony? You're right, I'll see if the Dalai Lama fancies a go. He must fancy living in Britain, a country known for peace and harmony over the last thousand years.

I should point out I absolutely detest racism. I just won't judge the bloke for being a racist until I'm 100% sure that he is a racist.

If he calls Sess summit he shouldn't I will be the first to call for his head.

Or to help hang him from a lamppost which may be more fitting.

Are you Italian? WTF is "modern fascism"?

Franco Freda? NAR? Pino Rauti? Valerio Fioravanti? Francesca Mambro? Valerio Borghese? Licio Gelli? Fascist murdering scum all of them.

    Educate yourself: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Strategy_of_tension

And don't believe for one minute things are over.

"Modern fascism" is probably fascism in recent history and the modern day. I'd need a dictionary to double check that but I'm fairly sure that's the case.

That article is indeed related to "modern fascism" and it's despicable. My point remains that salute was reappropriated by racists who got what they deserved but like the swastika, which is still commonly used in India, it doesn't necessarily suggest racist beliefs.

Oh come on DD. DC's a confessed fascist albeit one who denies racist inclinations. Fascism's an extreme form of politics which doesn't bode too well with modern egalitarian thinking. The snarl says it all and draconian ain't the word.

Of course Churchill's politics were more than a bit iffy by modern standards - but he had the excuse of Victorian colonial influences. DC's had a lot more time to smell the coffee, understand fascism in a boarder context yet still supports Mussolini. Wee bit suspect don't ya think?

If I'm reading you right, I reckon you could've done without a Di Canio appointment - but with it being a fait accompli an' all and desperation doing funny things, you find yourself hoping for a sunny day. We Rs know the feeling mate. Just glad we didn't get a fascist to turn things round. Poor you. Know MON didn't work out but whatever did Sunderland fans do to deserve that?

    I really wanted Solskjaer mate.

I don't know whether I'm genuinely excited by having a young, charismatic and attack minded manager at the club (regardless of his alleged political views) or whether somewhere between now and the start of this horrendous run we're on I had a nervous breakdown.

However, the club is in dire straights partially down to a legacy of bad buying by Keane and Bruce, partly down to MONs inability to get the decent players we do have playing. We aren't going to get out of it by giving the new manager ****. We may get out of it by allowing him to do his job and hoping for a honeymoon period.

As I said before I detest racism and would never knowingly support an active racist. I didn't want to offend anyone so if I did apologies but our backs are against the wall and we need to support the chap.

However you try to dress it up, Fascist, Neo-Fascist, Modern Fascist or cream cake fascist..........A fascist IS a fascist and there should be no room in the English game for people like DiCanio to make his odious politics main stream.
And that is what will start us on the slippery slope....a very sad day :(

This will be the modern game in a microcosm - If Sunderland win a couple of games and survive at the end of the season DiCanio will be feted as the conquering hero and the whole crazy roadshow will continue with the crackpot being the big story and the team bit-part players. The Sports Editors will be having orgasms...

His fascist salute has got nothing to do with history; he is doing it now. It is all about how he interprets his action. In my mind he is a fascist who should be laughed at in the civilized world.
Sunderland are going down, it is just a question of who overtakes them, QPR, wigan or both.

You my friend are judging his whole political spectrum on one or two highlighted recorded moments..I'm sure we have all said things in our lives in the heat of the moment which could be deemed that way..The same man has also been a staunch backer of the kick racism out of football campaign, so I for one am willing to see what he brings to our club...

Mate, i wouldn't expect anything else, other than you to support your new manager but to put DiCanio's views as some kind of mistake and something he regrets, is in fact (IMHO) incorrect. At no time (as far as i can see) has he renounced publicly his fascist views and therefore i can only conclude that he still believes in them.

Out of interest, how is the appointment going down with fans from your club ?? SAFC, your area and your fans have a strong history of militant anti-fascism and it seems strange that his appointment would be accepted without question (A genuine question, honestly).

As a staunch socialist myself, I of course denounce fascism..However, if all my past comments/actions had been recorded, I'm sure that some of them could be picked out to make me appear different..As I say, I'm willing to see what he brings to our club, and regarding his politics I will look at the whole book rather than just the cover..
