After the caper down the road it seems that many folk are screaming 'God no, not McClaren' or similar and that got me thinking, what is actually so bad about McClaren ?

OK, he didn't enamour himself in England because he failed to get the national team into Euro 2008, but aside from that he did very well with Middlesborough, a traditionally second and third tier club who he kept in the PL and won their only trophy, as well as getting them to a Euro Cup final. In Holland he has won the league and he was also assistant manager at Manu during a very successful spell for them. He also displayed very astute tactical awareness while at Boro (think of those Euro games where his attacking subs won games) and we can't really take a poor league performance during that Euro campaign as a sign of a bad manager, more the sign of a less rich club with a stretched squad.

I would never list him as a world beater, he had a poor spell in Germany and in Nottingham, but is he really as s*e as is made out ?

Is this another example of footballs collective 'wisdom' that is rarely based on actual facts and observations or am I missing something ? Would Sunderland do well to appoint him ahead of perceived foreign flair or one of these media darling managers like Poyet ?

I think he would do quite well if he went there. Had Boro playing good football and a Uefa Cup final and they were always safe in the league. He as had bad spells 2 with the national team most obvious (but who does come out of that looking better?). his time abroad was mixed but he would know his fair share about the players in those leagues and different playing styles etc and could potentially be a good move.

I think he'd do very well at Sunderland and they'd be wise to appoint him.

Agree with this but I do think Marty was doing a grand job and they should have stuck with him.

At the end of the day though it really isn't up to us, and they'll go ahead and do what they want no matter what.

There's not a lot wrong with McLaren. Goodness, there's been worse here; would I have taken McClaren over all of the following: Charlton, Dalglish, Gullit, Kinnear, Alllardyce and Souness?

Yes. Each and every time. And that's before the first ball was kicked and without the benefit of hindsight.

You can't honestly say you would want Sscchteve if you were managerless- even if thats just based on popular opinoin of him.

If he turned up as one of four candidates, the others being Hughes, Allardyce and Souness, and I had to select one of those four then every time it would be McClaren without a shadow of a doubt.
