Sunderland are talking to Di Canio about lifting the club away from relegation. This will be a very interesting appointment, definitely one to watch. I think Di Canio will get Sunderland firing for the run in, but more interesting will be to see how he does next season. Would have loved him at Leeds, he is a winner!!
Intresting is one way to describe it. I can see this being as bad as the Ince to Blackburn appointment. I can see Sunderland getting relegatated next season
I agree fully with McDermott, think he will get us up, worry about his ability to keep us up once we're there. Mustn't dawdle though, getting to that period where clubs considering a new manager for next season will be talking to him. Warnock should get sacked NOW and McDermott brought in right away to assess the players and put his plans in place.
After watching a 5 minute article on him yesterday I would have to agree, I wouldn't want him at our club.
A load of impressionable youngsters will probably run their bollocks off for this guy and that's enough to win League 1/2 games! But the question is how desperate were sunderland and ourselves if we seriously considered him. Maybe our luck has finally changed. Getting rid of Captain Birdseye and appointing a half decent manager in BM. Onwards and upwards.
He did very very well with Swindon (I think it was) but he made the move to the prem too early, he shoulda joined a league 1 or champ club and earned his way up through promotion and I think he would've done better, still young as a manager so has a lot of time to improve.
Problem he has now, after some of the stuff I read about him yesterday, is he's seriously tarnished and unlikely any club would bother with his services. May have managed his last team
All very good points. I saw his Swindon team play quite a few times ... there were games where they played fast, passing football that was a better standard than a lot of Championship clubs. Should he have stayed at Swindon for a bit longer? Probably, but how do you turn down a Prem job? Truth is, Sunderland have a huge problem ... their players. Di Canio was brought in to "sort out the prima donnas", which he did. They spit the dummy and suddenly he's no good? This debacle highlights the rubbish that the Prem has become. It is a hugely over rated league, hyped up to the enth degree by Sky and the media. Instead all it has become is an easy payday for a vast amount of okay footballers. The monster has been created, and every now and then we catch a glimpse of it. Sunderland is the latest example. How can these under achieving players keep getting away with it? Last season their fans were bombarding phone ins after O'Neill got axed ... their gripe? The prima donna players who let a very good manager down and who were destroying their club!! Di Canio was revered as the only man possible of kicking butt and saving them from relegation. This he did. However, the fish had rotted so far already that sprinkling it with a bit of salt and sticking it in the freezer for the summer couldn't save it. Sunderland's pansies started this season clearly with the "we'll show you" attitude, culminating in their disgraceful charade at WBA where they pretended they were footballers. They knew what they were doing ... assassinating their manager. A phone call to the CEO, a clandestine meeting threatening her with a boycott ... and bang!! Manager is sacked, she better hope they LOVE the next manager she appoints!! There it is ... the Prem footballer of today unmasked. They take no blame for their failures, but milk any success their club has (see John Terry, banned captain lifting trophy). They are above criticism, how can they be criticised if they earn more than a small country each season? This attitude has filtered through to the England setup now, these Prem "stars" parading at Wembley but not actually playing. Oh, it's not because they can't play, it's just that they're not good enough at the highest level. Don't tell them, though. Sky keeps telling them a different story, and they clearly believe it. Sunderland ... relegation is the only cure for you. At least all those rats at your club will jump ship Odemwingie style ... you won't even have to transfer list them. Your board is a disgrace, and it reflects in your players. The right thing to do would be to refund all your season ticket holders, transfer list the entire senior squad and start again. The fish is smelling awful now, and it's stinking up football.
all very good points Billy. Bonus points for mentioning Terry the show stealer please log in to view this image Another thing with regards to the board as well, they have adopted the "continental" club structure in such a half assed way. It was clear that a lot of players needed to be moved on last season, and that was done. But, they bring in a director of football to oversee transfers, 13 of them in fact, taking it out of the managers hands. Now, I don't agree with the way Di Canio puts blame on his players all of the time (I also don't agree with the managers who won't ever blame the players if they've been awful), but it was a tall ask to get essentially a new squad to hit the ground and play well together. Now presumably Di Canio was asked about these transfers, but he won't have had the final say. So I do think it's incredibly harsh to sack the guy this early on just because they haven't gelled yet. But alas, the Premiership just doesn't understand the need for time in football - it's all too immediate.
Sunderland knew who they were getting and should have looked in to what he's done in the past. Everybody knew he was a 'loose cannon' and a total psycho. He has come up too quick and it probably going to damage him. They really shouldn't have got rid of O'Neil, they should have just let him get on with his job. Poyet's in talk with Sunderland now, TBH I don't really like his chances there. I'll give him a year and they'll be calling for his head.
WE have dodgy arabs without cash, but has anyone else noticed how bad American owners can be. Don't foregt the two idiots who raped Liverpool and the family pinochio who own and rape the scumchester club. Another yank in charge of the scousers who so far so good, but should have let Suarez go when they had chance because he's an idiot and liability. Elliot Short has sacked more managers than Doug Ellis and the new Doug Ellis is the bloke whos gotten rid of everyone who has been in charge. Will Lambert survive? Villa were always pushing for top 6 even when Dol was there, but gradually investment in the team declined and remember they had the french scouse in charge who had a bad heart but they employed him anyway. How come MON always ends up with these fruit loops.
The yanks are bad when it comes to English clubs. MON spent buckets loads on players and could never get the team right. I can't remember how many Defenders he brought in a stint of 4 years but it was a lot. O'Neil threw the toys out of the pram and left a week before the season started because Lerner wouldn't hand full of cash. Granted O'Neil was unlucky with Sunderland. Personally I would not have hired Houllier after Liverpool and the French fiasco at the 2010 World Cup. Houllier shouldn't touch a club ever again. He's like Martinez he's a pants manager with seems to get jobs beyond belief. As for Liverpool, the owners seem to be doing well now but you've got remember they hired Hodgson that was a disaster and they sacked Dalgleish as well
