We seem to be using Bolton as a landfill site lately - a place to dump our rubbish. :D

Surely the most pointless contract extension in history?#

Got nothing against the guy, thought he was a top player in League One, but that extension still baffles me to this day, after only making 3 appearences that season.

Anyway, good luck Danny (unless your given another pointless year here)

Maybe they see a future for him as a coach? Seems well-liked by the younger players.

DTLW has been beaten to transfer news.

Expect to be reported to the high court.

Loads of players have said he's the funniest bloke in the dressing room. Having him around is probably good for everyone as he's well liked.

I believe Butterfield is one of the most well-liked members of our squad, and most players cite him as the joker of the bunch! Thus the most likely reason for his extension! If he keeps the morale up and allows the squad to bond I'm all for him remaining a part of the squad!

Schneiderlin in his Q&A said he was the funniest player, by a mile. I recall Lallana said in an interview that he once started singing to a Waitress, or something along those lines?

That's one thing that is odd about Cortese. For all the talk about how he has no loyalty/appreciation re: Adkins and LeTiss, Saints renew a lot more contracts and/or generally keep players around a lot longer than I would.

I think many of us would have gotten rid of Puncheon.

I always thought Jaidi was interesting as he really only played for Saints on the downside of his career for a short time and was injured most of it. You would think that when he looks back on his career he'll remember the premier league days and would feel no particular bond with Saints and vice versa.

But also Connolly, Holmes, Forte, Chaplow, Hammond, Barnard, Butterfield, etc. Lots of players Saints renewed despite there not being an obvious place for them, or that we held on to when we could have transferred them. Some of them were on high wages maybe but even then Cortese could have transferred them with cash. It really seems that unless a player wants to go, Saints are happy to hang on to them (or at least their contracts) and I think it's more than just not a factor of Saints not being able to get much for them.

Butterfield is a good player. He just isn't going to get a game with two RBs in front of him. Ian Harte gets on Reading's bench, and he was starring in Lge One for Carlisle 3 years ago. Blimey, he's had a funny old career.

You forgot Murty. Injured immediately and hardly got a game, and eventually his contract was wound up after ages. Then Saints had him back as a budding coach. Now he lives and breathes Saints [and Reading, not unnaturally].

I was about to add what was said above. Cortese shows great loyalty to those that he thinks deserves it. This was the reason he stuck with Adkins after the poor start (when sacking him would appear more understandable)...eventually he decided on a change despite better results...a manager you don't believe in (rightly or wrongly) is too big a risk. Seaborne said how good Nicola was to him when injured (despite it being self inflicted through drink). He listened to Puncheon and gave him a second chance...Punch said he was a man of integrity. He kept on Wilkins when Adkins came in and, I believe, he offered to keep him on when MP arrived. The only one released on loan without dignity was Sharp.

There's a lot more dignity in going on loan than playing for the under 21s!
