Spurs never had any intention of getting it. They just wanted to apply some pressure to Boris so they could build their new stadium in their back yard. It was a political **** up. West Ham took advantage of that fact. As Ric said higher up, its a joint thing anyway with UK athletics, for the legacy bollocks, and will have athletics in the summer.
Isn't the MD privately owned now? I thought it had been sold on and the country had lost a fortune on it in the time it was state owned.
Meridian Delta Ltd own the lease now - it cost the government £1M a month after its closure in 2000 to keep it maintained, until Delta bought it in late 2001. Obviously it's the O2 now - it's got loads of various things - a cinema, indoor arena (20,000 seats), a music club, restaurants and cafes, bars, etc. Much better than an empty dome, like it was from 2001-2007.
If it is I can't find any information on when it was sold and who to. I do know that AEG pay the owners (whoever they may be) £6 million a year in rent, which shows how profitable the place must be as a venue.
According to Wikipedia (not the most reliable source I know!) Meridian Delta have a 999 year lease which means presumably it is still government owned and generating an income.
