What future for the printed newspaper comes to mind when I read that the WO has increased the price of a copy from 60p to 90p? It doesn't make it to the Maison de la Presse so I don't know, but am told that it has become very thin and not worth the money.

To think that I used to fuel my passion for WFC by delivering it every Friday and with 50 copies of the thing my bag was very heavy. In those days it was the only way to get news of the team, yet now we have and expect updates every day.

Does the newspaper have the same effect on people who would rather read something they can take on the bus or train and throw away, or a book that they can keep in their bookcase and go back to a number of times?

Frequently a daily paper will be out of date with it's news by the time it hits the streets, but is that a reason for it to cease? There are often in-depth articles that explore matters that the internet versions do not carry because of space.

Not sure that I would wish to try and keep the advertisers paying up if I ran a local newspaper, but then I don't usually read adverts. It seems that changes must happen, but will it be a orderly transition to electronics or less and less titles?

Got to admit, the only time I buy a paper nowadays is when I am visiting my mum in Norfolk or for a crossword to do on the train.
There's something about sitting outside my mum's with a coffee first thing in the morning trying to do the crossword, whatever the weather.

That sounds to me like the quintessential English eccentric - stubbornly sitting in a garden chair, wrapped in dressing gown with newspaper and coffee to hand, blue with cold yet blithely ignoring the falling snow..........;)

Especially when my mum lives on the North Norfolk Coast about 2 mins from the seafront. When it's an Easterly wind, I have to admit it does get a tad fresh there.

Morning all from a snowy bandit country - about half an inch has fallen this morning. Nice quiet day ahead, catching up on some TV and doing a few chores.
I very rarely buy a newspaper these days. When #1 son lived at home I used to read his copy of The Times he brought home and I used to get The Independent on a Saturday to do the 16 square Sudoko, but after the ****ty article on us a while ago, they are on an embargo!
I went to have a small glass of my very nice 25 year old Island Malt last night and the bloody cork has broken! So I will need to do some careful surgery this afternoon!

I wish BB - decided last night that caution was the best approach and I am pleased to say that the operation has been a complete success and the patient is recovering well. Luckily I do not expect the contents of said bottle to last too long...

A driving instructor put flyers through my door this morning - I had to do a double-take when I saw his first name, which is Miles.

I'm all for equal rights, and equally in favour of politicians calling for clubs and clubgoers to have a bit of class. But why does no-one give even a cursory mention to the fact that the club is discriminating against men?

As for the Wobby, I will not pay 90p for it. I'm happy to pay 60p for a bit of OP nostalgia and the more in-depth versions of the interviews and match reports, but the content does not justify a 50% hike.

And I'm all in favour of leaving such clubs alone to put this sort of thing on as they wish. After all, if it is perfectly acceptable to have scantily clad young girls, revealing far more than just cleavage, staggering around our town centres at all hours of the night completely drunk and leaving themselves open to all sorts of predators - what is so wrong with this? You try suggesting that that sort of activity be stopped and those very same MP's will be jumping down your throat and screaming about sexism and women's rights.

I was actually hoping they would go 5-0 up, only to have the game abandoned due to a 4pm blizzard.

Yes, I am that evil. <devil>

Dominic is a professional footballer. Far too good to ply his trade in an oversized back garden in Bedfordshire. He is however enjoying the conditions up in Carlisle.

Morning all from a snowy bandit country - had another half inch or so overnight. But roads and pavements are clear, so getting about is easy.
Cricket is looking interesting, England need to pick up some consistency to be ready for the summer.

Don't know about the summer WY. It needs to sort itself out fast before my 2 week break in the mother County next week <laugh>
