Came across 'The Italian Job' on tv yesterday (the Orig) and tho I've seen it so many times, I sat down and watched it again.... You're only supposed to blow the bloody doors off ! Awesome. Just thinking. British cinema, what are it's highs? Where does 'the Italian Job' fit in? What are your highs in British cinema? Your top ten Brit movies? Mine are: Life of Brian The Long Good Friday Get Carter The Italian Job Alfie Snatch Human Traffic A Clockwork Orange Layer Cake Trainspotting
Kes Life of Brian Sexy Beast Nil by Mouth Get Carter Quadrophenia The Long Good Friday This is England Dead Man's Shoes Layer Cake There's probably better ones that I haven't thought of yet.
I'm surprised nobody has mentioned Monty Python and the Holy Grail. Much funnier than LoB for me, but not as insightful. For me, Mike Leigh's Secret and Lies is the best British film. Can I also throw in a worst? The film version of Godber's Up and Under. Possibly the worst I have ever seen.
Not a British film, but I stuck the TV on when I got in last night and Volcano was on. I'm a big Tommy Lee Jones fan, but that film is utterly appalling. As for the worst remake of all time, it has to be Nicolas Cage in the remake of The Wicker Man.
Just looked through your list, I thought Sexy Beast was utter ****e. This is England is ace. Shocked to see Quadrophenia....
I just don't know which film is my fave I've seen so many over the years. Fairly newish ones are The Green Mile, Tom Hanks and Sixth Sense with Bruce Willis. The biggest laughs was It's A Mad Mad Mad World with Spencer Tracey but for sheer impact, and my first taste of the big screen, The Dorchester, was The Ten Commandments Cecil B Demille's masterpiece with Charlton Heston and Yul Bryner. No fancy computer graphics as some of the props look rather lame compared to todays offering but still brilliant.
Zulu Italian Job Quadrophenia Get Carter Kes Trainspotting This Is England 28 Days Later 24 Hour Party People Elephant Man I wasn't sure if Wind That Shakes The Barley would count. Shaun Of The Dead, Wicker Man, Dead Man's Shoes, A Clockwork Orange & Made In Britain are also good.
No order: Monty Python & Holy Grail Zulu Italian Job Trainspotting Snatch Quadrophenia This Is England Get Carter Monty Python & Life Of Brian Shaun Of The Dead or Hot Fuzz, can't choose
Yes, yes it is. No shadow of a doubt. Words cannot express how bad that film is. Best of British? Confessions of a window cleaner for me
This will sound massively gay but i'm throwing Shakespeare in Love into the mix....also putting slumdog millionaire out there too, Robin Hood prince of thieves and Hot Fuzz
Local Hero Hey, Mr Porter Gregory's Girl The rest of the Will Hay films Carry on At Your Convenience Carry on Camping ("that'll be a Parnd") (The Original) St Trinians Train Robbery The Lavinder Hill Mob I know that's more than 10, but hey ho
True OLM my apologies, Get Carter was good but I wasn't sure on the re-make of Tinker Tailor Solider Spy and although not a film the Beebs version was far superior.
