“I have a very strange way of playing football. I’m my own severest critic and I realise when I make mistakes.

“There are times that I get yellow cards that can influence a game. I have improved and I have to continue."

Despite his “strange" type of football, Suarez is regarded by many as one of the best players in the world and is amongst the favourites to pick up the PFA Player of the Year award this season.

The Uruguayan international has scored 29 goals in all competitions for Liverpool so far this campaign.

“You can lose some things, but can never lose the slyness, the passion that you have had since you were a kid playing in the street.

“If I didn’t have the character that I have today on the pitch, I don’t think that I would have become the player that I am today."

With no Champions League on the cards for Liverpool again next season, some are questioning whether Suarez will stick around for much longer.

But Suarez also told AFP, he is happy at Anfield and hopes Brendan Rodgers’ work since his arrival as Liverpool manager last summer will pay off in the new Premier League campaign, starting August.

He added, “We have to realise we have a new manager who is imposing a philosophy and a way of playing that the players are adapting to as best we can. We hope that it will bear fruit next year."
