I've been looking through the old league tables since the Premier League began in 1993, And have thus discovered that no team has secured their Premier League status on the final day of the season more times than Southampton (6 times). Does anyone think we'll have to do it again this year?
Possibly. Could be we need to not loose 28-0 or something like that. But i do think we will be in amongst it come what May.
I don't think so. But as others have said it could go down to the last game in the same way it did last season, with no real danger due to our goal difference. I think Wigan vs Villa will be the decider for the 3rd relegation place as Reading and QPR will probably be long gone by then.
Sorry to be a pedant but wasn't is that if we lost and westham won they got second? Imagine if we lost out on the very last day of the season having been in the auto spots for soo long would have been crushing.
But fortunately we were at home to the ****test team in the league, and the rest they say, is history.
Part of me hopes we need to not lose against Stoke by 10+ goals on the last day of the season so we can all let out a huge sigh of relief and run on the pitch in pure ecstasy as we have only been beaten 9-0 by a hat-trick of hat-tricks by Michael Owen.
It's so tight at the moment down there and only a run of a few bad games and we're right amongst it. I'm definitely hesitant of anyone being overly optimistic right about now.
Isn't part of the problem that for the last 3 years we've been competing against teams that were winning regularly. We missed out first season, and in the second that run of Huddersfield's put us under pressure; similarly West Ham's refusal to lose often enough made it squeaky bum time at the end of last season. Now we are competing with teams that don't win so often, so a 4 point advantage is bigger by comparison. For the first time in almost all of my Saints supporting life I can't make the last game of the season. It won't matter. We'll be safe. Blind optimism? I did also say we'd beat Liverpool!
Good point Channon....big difference between teams chasing promotion and teams trying to avoid relegation. I have always felt confident (apart from the couple of hours before every match) because we have been playing well all season generally, but have dropped silly points. We are by far the best team in the mix at the bottom.
It ain't over till its over (they could make good song lyrics) Chelsea match is important and could decide how comfortable the ride is. Victory and we will likely leapfrog a few teams and be one win away from the predicted 37 points required this season. Lose and that reading match looks a bit more nervy must win
