I see wha your saying but I still think he is best as an AM,SS type of role. I think in CM he can get caught with the hollywood passes and not really having the legs to do a lot of the defensive work to warrant holding that space. Alonso would be perfect foil with Lucas and hopefully another DM type we would be bringing in.

    I echo sentiments on wages.

That would be the biggest obstacle. Think he has some years left... he's not a winger, wing back, attacking mid or striker... he could potentially go on playing a while longer.

Obviously doesn't have as many years on him as he did and would have little/no sell on value in a few years.

Think he could do what Gary mac did, give us those few years, get a big boost and hopefully give time to bring in the next crop.

I don't see it. Not sure BR (and FSG) would bring him in for a few reasons; Age, high wages, sell on value is non existent, dropping Allen, trio of Gerrard/Lucas/Alonso has a serious weakness with pace and a pressing style.

We need to find the next Xabi, not bring him back. Invest that money and wages into someone else.

    1. There's no risk, he's a well rounded player of the highest calibre, he's very unlikely to lose it because of a transfer.
    2. He won't need to adapt to the PL.
    3. He's 31, 4 year contract... ends his career with Liverpool at 35. Pirlo is nearly 34 and he's still at the top of his game.
    4. His position means he can keep on going for another 5 years at the top flight.
    5. He loves Liverpool.

... If he genuinely wants to come, we'd be mad to turn him down.

We could do with an experienced player like Alonso.

To think that the fat Spanish waiter, forced him out so he could bring in Gareth Barry.

It is no suprise that you guys have dropped down the table since he left, easily the best midfielder you've had in the last 10 years

You may well be right but I don't get this bull about sell on value. We should never be a selling club anyway. Look at what we've spent on midfielders in the last two years and it's cost us far more in terms of league positions than any money we'd lose on Alonsos sell on value.

A top quality midfielder with years of experience and a love for the club. If he's available and the wages weren't crippling we should fight like hell for him <ok>

I rather buy Mascherano than Alonso at this moment in time ...

Agree with Billy - sod all this 'sell on' fees etc. We shouldn't be worrying about the finances (within reason of course - can't waste money for the fun of it). We should be concerned with improving our team on the pitch which will help us achieve success off of it.

Won't happen if BR is still at the club come summer, he wont want Alonso because he will never play him. Joe Allen could be bed-ridden with TB and still get the nod.

I'm not sure that midfield is balanced enough. Gerrard is not the runner he was in 2009.

The role he does now is more like what Alonso does, but with added forward runs off the ball, meaning he adds goals and assists from deep areas.

I would prefer to see them used in rotation a lot of the time. That way we always have experienced, world class talent in.

Some games may require all three. All three late in games when we are ahead will be good to.

So I'd play 2 of Alonso, Gerrard and Lucas with either Henderson or Suarez (or Eriksson ;) ) in front depending on the system.

I agree with the Mascerano comment earlier.

I don't give a bollox about wages. this is not even a bad move form the point of view of legends shouldn't come back.

this is all about quality. if we got alonso back THIS summer its be brilliant.

Oh and 4-3-3 is not 4-2-3-1, gerrard and alonso could be sitting in there nicely imo.

Only club I'm aware of who has serious interest in him is Gala...

Doubt he'd play anywhere else in the PL except for us. Maybe Bayern/Juventus would take a look.

I still maintain that BR/FSG won't buy him, quality though he is. Even if you ignore the sell on value (which is important to our owners), he can't play effectively with Gerrard and Lucas, no balance to the midfield or stamina/pace. Meaning we're spashing out 10-15mill and god-knows what on wages for a rotation/bench player. No chance.

  19. I think Bayern is a good shout, he would help to form them into Guardiola's style, especially if they attempt to buy Suarez from us too. That's this Xavi and Messi <ok>
