    According to David Gill:

"We know the keeper we want and are in a good position and I'm sure we can get the deal done"
    http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/13403434.stm

So it looks like another Valencia-esque transfer when the deal is concluded close to the end of the season. But who do we think it will be?

My initial view was Stekelenburg was favourite, but the BBC are now reporting he is in contract discussions with Ajax. With Bayern announcing that they have agreed a £13 million deal for Neuer, does that mean the new keeper will be de Gea? Or Lloris has been mentioned recently. Or will it be a complete surprise? Anyone have any inside information, or failing that any good rumours?

Whoever it is, it's good to see the club making a move early. We don't want the same problems we had replacing Schmeichel...

Lloris isn't good at crosses and there has been no talk about him, Neuer is going to Munich, don't know about Stekelenburg. I think you will get De Gea

I saw an article about a month ago saying Lloris was definitely leaving Lyon, and then one a week ago saying Stekelenburg was going to Schalke to replace Neuer so we were now considering Lloris. But then it's all rumours in the end. I also reckon de Gea is most likely at this stage.

I think Fergie will go for experience. De Gea may be a bit young you don't really know how he will handle the pressure.

I think it's De Gea or Stekelenburg. I'm leaning towards De Gea but only becuase of the recent speculation that Stekelenburg is going to Germany. De Gea looks like a top keeper, has shakey moments here and there but at his age he's exceptional.

To be honest what logic is there in gettining De Gea? He can't speak English and will need to communicate with defense. He is also very young and do we want a 20 year old replacing a experience world class keeper? At just 20 he will make a lot of mistakes which could cost us. Is that a risk worth taking? He will also fetch around 20m which is a lot of money for a goal keeper without much experience. I just can't see the logic in such a move. The best option in my opinion is Sketlenburg. He is 28 and of a good age, he is very tall and has played in title winning sides and also went to the world cup final. He also speaks perfect English, so it is a no briner but something is telling me we won't sign him and we will get De Gea but logic states we will get a experienced goal keeper like Sketlenburg as it lacks risks.

I quite like McGregor of Rangers.
That was talked about briefly, about half a year ago...
But he seems to be off the radar now.

Out of these I can see it being Stekelenburg.

Yeah but if De Gea works out you are sorted in the goalkeeping position for the next 20 years.

I wonder if SAF is trying to follow the example Madrid set when they put their faith in Casillas? He was a bit shaky at first, but has been one of the top keepers in the world over the past few years and works well with their defence.

Do you think the Ajax keeper put himself favourably in the window by dropping the trophy from the bus? <laugh>

Maybe he was trying to make Ajax let him go on the cheap...

swarbs, bit late getting on this conversaton.you need to choose wisely as you well no a goalkeeper is upmost important to any team.
i remember from years ago alex stepney, fantastic goalkeeper, but then you had paddy roach, remember him?gary bailey good keeper, jim leighton, hmm well!!! les sealey, taibi, remember him?(sorry about spelling)who i believe replaced a certain peter schmichell(again spelling),andy goram, roy carroll.barthtez, foster, and now van de saar.why dont utd try to sign kasper schmichael from leeds as a added replacement to vds as the lad has talent, apart from getting a well known replacement?
from my list of keepers i have given you,who do you think was the worst?

The worst was Taibi, that's why he only played once. As for getting Kasper as well as a well known replacement, we don't need him. We are buying a well known replacments and we already have bought Lidegaard who looks pretty decent. Hopefully Lidegaard will be up for a fight for the No 1 jersey, but I think the bigger name we singe, which is looking ncreasingly likely to be Dea Gea, will become the clubs No 1, at least to start with anyway.

Definitely Taibi. Sealey, Goram, Carroll and Foster were all decent keepers, just not up to the top level. Barthez was quality, but far too eccentric, and Leighton was great one week **** the next, whereas Taibi was just ****. That's the only one of SAF's signings that I honestly look at and go "what was he thinking?!"
