Not sure how many of you have read 'Soccernomics' it's a riveting read about the science and stats behind football. Anyway an interesting chapter on managers in which they rank managers who have worked in the game for a minimum of five seasons. The ranking is based on performance relative to their players' wage bills. I'm pleased to say our special one is 14 out of 251. Bob Paisley is top with Fergie 2nd. brb- your special one - Hessy nowhere to be seen I'm afraid!! So perhaps you should let MA get on with it instead of moaning that he's not given enough players that have barely reached puberty a chance! UTG
I saw the title and thought, 'At last a thread about me.' Joking aside - I've not read the book- but as we all know there are statistics and damned lies. Clubs like Man Utd can buy their way to success. In the case of the book, unless success is achieved, there is little chance of a good ranking. I admire what Martin Allen has achieved at Gillingham thus far, but - actually, he has not 'achieved ' anything until we get promoted - and what 'success' he has achieved doesn't mean that he is the 14th best manager in the football league. NO - I'm not decrying Allen's record at Gillingham - don't forget I suggested his name when I started the 'New Manager' thread last summer. UTG & Mad Dog.
I should of added this was completed before he joined Gillingham and just to reiterate includes wage bill which is a bit of a leveller for the lower league managers. My point is there are winners and losers in management. MA is a winner for sure.
See and there is the problem Lenny, you never will know who is my special one and I'm not going to tell you. To win an argument you need to understand the person first. So I set you a challenge Lenny, where have I ever directly named a particular manager is better than MA, all assumptions drawn on your part I am afraid fella. Go and find that comment and post it here, I am here to be proved wrong but I am reasonably confident I have not made such a statement, simply because unlike your said league table, I do not categorise managers in that sense. I have managers past and present that I may favour but you are so way, way off the mark. How many more times do I have to say it, Hessy was too soft, 'Mr Nice Guy' as I would refer to him as. I actually like MA's style better in that sense but... What I have done is created debate over youth v experience. What I have said is that I can read through MA's psychology. What I have said is I have no time for the media and statements within them, simply because they go against my morals not particularly about MA, although that does attract me to finding fault in his comments and those uneasy pat's on the back as I would refer to them as - you know the one's I mean. I reiterate I will not be tunnelled vision by a promotion, even if we pick up our first league two title since 1964. I will applaud MA for what I see is right and achievements gained ie auto promotion, league title. I will also voice my opinion for what I see is wrong. Sadly though if you are looking for happy clappy, then well I guess I'm not your true love. I love Joe Martin more than you at the moment and that is scary, like the sudden turn of events in a Hammer House of horror movie. To be honest I concern myself more with the politics of football in life, than ever worrying about MA, remembering he will probably only be two seasons of that life. I suppose he should be congratulated on one thing at least, he lasted past Christmas. As for Fergie in your league table, I cannot believe you even mentioned that name to me.
