thanks. I thought the end was a bit silly, it was a war film and didn't need an ending like that ! I know in the book he lives.
Saving Private Ryan for me. First 30 minutes of that film I got cramp in my hands from gripping the chair arms in the cinema. fubar......fubar.
That's the one where according to the film no one else but Yanks were involved, isn't it? Actually there are a lot more than that. Whole generations are growing up with no idea about what really happened due to the films portraying the Yanks as winning it on their own. As forThe Great Escape, not one Yank broke out, they had all been moved before the escape. Yet kids seem to think they played an important part. Then there is the one showing them obtaining an enigma machine from a submarine when it was the Royal Navy.Imagine if we made a film showing how we stormed Iwo Jima.
All the above but can I also recommend the Odd Angry Shothttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TIBmc4pn8LY&feature=youtube_gdata_player
For realistic battle scenes showing the grim reality of things I would recommend Enemy At The Gates. Clips and the whole movie are on YouTube.

There were no Brits on Omahah Beach on D-Day though. I think you mean U571. I agree that's horse ****.
**** the films............live the life and see the world!!!! Hard to have a "best war film" but "The Battle of the Bulge" 1965 is my favourite. "Look at that, gentlemen. Compared to war, all other forms of human endeavor shrink to insignificance." General Patton
Apocalypse Now and Inglorious Basterds for me. Band Of Brothers was absolutely fantastic as well, but sadly that was a TV series (dammit)...
