Ok so this thread is slightly off topic as it applies to all teams and not just Newcastle, but I thought I'd share it as a concept and see what everyone thinks of it.

Basically it applies to cup fixtures and probably has more relevance to fixtures in the latter rounds when the so-called 'bigger' teams come into play.

The Man United versus Chelsea FA Cup match got me thinking about this general idea about replays being a nuisance for a variety of reasons, but also games where momentum makes it more attractive to play Extra Time rather than stop and arrange a replay.

Has anyone ever thought it would be better to make Extra Time in the first legs OPTIONAL at Full Time?
So for example it could be a rule that the referee (or equivalent match official) consults each manager independently at final whistle and if at least one refuses Extra Time the tie must go to a replay as normal.
No reasons are required and no pressure can be applied, each decision is final.

If both decisions happen to agree, the match will continue into Extra Time and the crowd is notified that the match will continue after a short break.

I think this adds an interesting edge to things and some strategy into it. Some managers like Benitez, for example could believe the momentum is with his team for claiming the score draw and wants the match to continue.
Ferguson may feel the game is slipping away and he might have a few injury concerns, but faces an away day and an extra game he also doesn't need.

Above all I think all managers would enjoy having that ability to choose and potentially go some way to avoid fixture congestion.

If you wanted to take the idea even further, you could integrate in a mobile SMS-based fan vote inside the stadium during the dying stages with proceeds split between both teams? The managers could even check the outcome to help influence their final decision.

Could it work? Do you like it as a possible idea?

I think it is a cracking idea, although poorer clubs would vote for another game for sure to get the additional cash.

Yeah I figured that would obviously happen a lot, but that's ok.

However, some may well feel they stand a better chance of a historic cup shock in Extra Time eh? Especially if they've banged in an equaliser late on.

A giant killing like that could be more valuable than an extra tie for PR etc...

Gives 'em the choice though doesn't it?

Indeed it does and a thought provoking idea.

Can't see it if it's down to choices on the day. Generally, why play for longer away when you can take the match back to your place, with the home crowd cheering you on?

Would be better to just make it compulsory that there is a Result with no replays in all cup games. Extra time and then pens in the first match if there is a draw.

Well I could see occasions where the away side is in the ascendancy and fancies their chances better in Extra Time – as I say, most would be those sides who want to avoid the extra fixture and congestion with Europe/League are issue.
I keep going back to the Man United v Chelsea match, but I would imagine Benitez didn't want that match to finish. Ferguson might have taken his chances too in order to spare an annoying replay.

Thing is, the point isn't about how often it gets invoked it's just there for those situations where it makes sense. It would still have to be an option for ALL ties however.

What I liked about it was that it adds an extra layer of uncertainty and if it got the fans involved it could add to the entertainment in the stadium.

I tend to agree with you about scrapping replays completely, until Newcastle are pegged back 1-1 and look ragged on the ropes! :D
