Wouldnt this 4 week window during optimum growing period have been better spent repairing the pitch rather than covering and damaging it? http://www.thisishullandeastriding....tory-18400322-detail/story.html#axzz2NEJ8kUsB This time next year i can see this being made a scapegoat for a shocking surface...
This is great for the club and the city. We need as much profile-building as is possible and this top level event is key to that. The pitch can be sorted with no problems, that is not a real concern so early in the season stand-down. Personally I would love to visit for a look-see as squash was one of my favourite sports, it has everything: combatitive skill, strategy and untimate fitness levels if you really want them. It is unbelievable to me that this sport is not yet Olympic, but hopefully that will change soon. If there are squash players out there who have never tried doubles, you really should; you need to work at it and gain an understanding, but once there it is great fun, with a little less demand.
What dates is it on? If it's Summer we should be ok as we'll have stopped playing on it and HFC only play there once every other week.
I'm sure squash is a great game, but our pitch can't cope with two matches a week and some daft bitch walking on it in high heels to have her picture taken with Roary so any extra pressure on it is unwelcome.
People seem to be overlooking that this is the ONLY sizeable window between games when a pitch could be properly dug up rather than a 2 week quick fix. We've got one of the worst pitches and when everyone else is racing against time to improve over 3 months we're shooting ourselves in the foot on a 1 month window.
The pitch was relaid before this season wasn't it? Or was it the season before? Either way, it got a bit **** fairly sharpish, therefore I reckon as it's gonna happen anyway we may as well have a squash tournament on it. I know it's typical of this city to be sceptical about anything new and different but this is the sort of thing we need to be embracing. As for the long term, I've had a brilliant idea. Brilliant: Get some sort of mechanism to raise the pitch above the stands so it gets direct sunlight. You also then get a roof for concerts. Tell me that's not brilliant.
Everybody's pitches are bad at this time of the year. It's not like it's a bog or like Chelsea's famous beach pitch a few years back. There's still grass on there. Very few pitches come through the winter months in decent shape.
I've just looked at the Rugby league fixtures and you're wrong. Hull FC play at home on 31 May. Looking at the BBC website they don't have another home game until 1 July.
Fair enough, i couldnt sully myself to do that. And im really not against something such as this coming to the city, its a great event. My point was does it have to be on the pitch? Could an olympics style temporary structure be built? on the marina would be amazing. I suppose we'll suck it and see what detrimental impact it has, but i maintain we'll be discussing this next winter....
You probably will. I am no groundsman, but your suggestion that we shouldn't have a squash tournament at the stadium during 4 weeks in May in order to repair the pitch, when the repairs can be done throughout June doesn't make a lot of sense.
Allam's aint gonna spend unnecessary money on a temporary venue are they? The pitch is bad anyway so I don't see what difference a squash court is going to make
Is a squash tournament really worth it? I thought squash was just a made up game like curby or wally until the Allams announced this. I can't see people flocking to hull by the millions to put their hard earned in the coffers of the club and the city's services, maybe 50 or 60 people might turn up. It's not like he's brought Wimbledon to the KC stadium is it?
Allam has done this for himself as he is a massive Squash fan and also to try and raise the profile of the sport in our area, which judging by your comment will certainly work.
Yeah, that's why all the clubs around the country wont bother digging up their pitches literally the day after the season finishes. They'll all wait until June....
Much ado about nothing; get a British Championship to Hull, get it to the KC, get the PR and revenue in the city and city's economy and give your kids an opportunity to see some of the fittest athletes in the world up close and personal. The whole pitch argument is a nonsense, don't just take the blinkers off, throw the sods away, this will benefit everyone.
So I don't quite understand why people are billing this to be the best thing since sliced bread? If anything I'm slightly concerned this may come at a cost to the SMC rather than a profit (I've no idea what kind of attendance is expected but I'd guess it will be pretty low) and as bum chin says we are losing a month where not only losing a months growth for a new pitch but also time we could be looking at other factors to help the pitch keep its shape through the season. I'm not convinced its purely down to lack of sunlight, and that something underneath isn't quite right. Someone on a different thread about la pitch said we do have grow lights which will compensate for lack of sun light and under soil heating should keep the pitch warm and healthy through the harsh winter months.
Schalke who lost to galatasary in champs league last night and were england lost to portugal in 2006, their pitch moves on a track under a stand and into a car park when theres no games for full sunlight and for concerts events etc
