Premier League strugglers Reading have confirmed the departure of manager Brian McDermott.
McDermott, 51, led the club to promotion last season, but four successive Premier League defeats have left them four points adrift of safety.
A Reading statement said: "Owner Anton Zingarevich wishes to place on record his thanks to Brian.
"The search for a successor starts immediately. It is hoped a new manager will be in place as soon as possible."

Seems a bit pointless at this stage of the season, can't see what this will gain them to be honest.

Very surprised at this. It's not like McDermott was given a large war chest for the PL, so I don't see what Reading's owners were hoping for? Very harsh.

I was just wondering if they already had someone lined up, obviously this is all just speculation, personally I'm a huge fan of Paolo Di Canio, but as said by Fred, Reading were given very little to boulster their squad, no easy task for McDermott.

Who would be a manager? Win promostion one season and then when the champagne hangover subsides you'll be left thinking that this time next year, because of your effort and achievement, you'd most likely be rewarded with the sack.

Surely a year in the Premiership is better than none at all. Or am I being too old-fashioned and realistic about these sort of things?

Ridiculous timing - even if they get a new manager in by the weekend their next 2 games are away to Man Utd and Arsenal then Southampton at home.

Can't see too many available managers getting much out of those 3

Can't see too many managers wanting to start off with games against Man Utd and Arsenal, they'll probably want to to wait and avoid a losing start so that they don't have the fans on their backs straight away.

That's a shame .... seemed like a good manager to me

Have the fans been asking for his head or just the owner?

Mrs Magpie Isn't this what Wolves did about this time last season?

And look where that got them.

I thought Reading would have stuck with him, but next season there is more money in The Prem and money talks.
I think Di Canio will be their new manager.

Tough on McDermot, but Di Canio is an exciting prospect. It will be an interesting experiment if he is their new manager. If charisma and passion counts for anything, he just might get a reaction out of them.

Seems a canny bloke and has obviously done tremendously well. However I do rate Di Canio and Poyet from the lower leagues. They play the game the right way but Di Canio in particular has a great attacking philosophy. I have watched a few of their games and when they are behind he is like SAF in that he'll just get more strikers on, no pissing about or sitting on his hands!
