Watched match of the day last night, I find the whole format a bit boring.
Mark L & Alan H opinion is very very poor I really wish the beeb would move them on.
compared to Monday night football on Skysports Gary Neville leaves them standing.

And they get paid a fortune!

When they showed the team of the day, Alan Hansen said he didn't understand how that team was selected and implying that the players weren't great (three of the back four were Saints players).
    1. None of the "big boys" played.
    2. It's based on today's games, not over the whole season.
    3. It's done through statistics, they may be inaccurate but you can't argue against them.

    Yep, agree with the OP.

I watched the SPL game between Hibs and Hearts earlier and actually found Mixu Paatelainen to be very interesting and knowledgeable.

    Anyone else?

Personally, MOTD is an old boys club which could do with breaking up and freshening up with more 'Gary Neville types'.

Have to admit I found the team of the day baffling. Not often you get a defender in there who has given away a penalty!

As for the rest, the format is absolutely fine, brilliant in fact; you're never going to please everyone with a programme like that, but I think they get as close as possible.

I have to agree that the pundits are generally poor though. Alan Shearer is the worst but Hansen and Lawrenson have very little to contribute these days either.

Do agree on your first point. And the second. Format is fine, and I was surprised that of all our back four if one missed out it was Yoshida.

Especially after BBC made him so prominent in the way the highlights were presented on this occasion.

But yeah, the pundits are pretty ****.

It's one of those things that people will always try and find a problem with. Alan Hansen definitely knows his defending, so he gives some good insight into mistakes that defenders make with their positioning and decisions. I can't see how Hansen is any less good at it than Neville. It may be a little dry, but tactical analysis should be.

The format of the programme is to show all the action and then pick it apart afterwards. I don't have a problem with that.

I like Gary Neville's analysis as well, but to be fair he is given far more time and analytical data than MOTD experts get. MOTD is really just a magazine programme to show the goals...Sky has acres to fill.

Anyone can analysis a game after the event. I don't see why they have ex players that didn't even play in the prem.
Before the prem it was beer and ***s and that was at half time!

Fran is spot on again. It's all down to time.
Compared to days of old the format is a lot better as every match is given a generous timeframe. The main point is to show the games.
They have little time between games and have to comment on each team. It's still a lot better than ITV who get strangled by advertisements. Shame Lee Dixon went there as he was good on MOTD2.

Having said all that I don't enjoy Shearer or Lawro who each have zero enthusiasm

Who the f--- told you that !
Hansen & Lawrensen were top players so dont belittle them in this manner - they may not be everybodies cup of tea as pundits but you cannot question their ability in their respective positions when playing for Liverpool when they were one of Europe's top sides.

For the last couple of years I've just been recording the show and watching it back with zero introductions/analysis. I don't really need Shearer/Hansen etc to tell me what I've just watched.

Have to say I much prefer the easier going manner of MOTD2. There's still plenty of chat and analysis, plus they have the luxury of going over the entire weekend's games. And because it is invariably Colin Murray who presents, the show has a lighter touch which even makes insomnia cures, Shearer, Lawrenson and Hansen, slightly more entertaining. Weird thing is, I like Gary Lineker and his presenting style, but with those fellow professionals, it's not so good. With MOTD2 you get MOTD3 on Monday morning.

****ing hate "chat & analysis" A ****ing one eyed Rhino could point out the ****ing obvious those mooncats do on MOTD.

"You see Gary, he scored that goal because he kicked the ball into the net and no one stopped him... now where's my £20,000 a show?"

Football coverage peaked with Brian Moore, been all downhill since.

    I stand corrected.

**** me, most Nurses, Paramedics, Fireman & Carers are not getting that a year. Those sacks of ****s on MOTD are possibly the most shameful ****s on this planet. I wouldn't think twice of nutting Hansen, Lawrenson & probably now Shearer if I met them.

When Keys and Grey went from Sky I thought the coverage was going to be worse for it, where in my opinion Gary Neville and Ed Chamberlain gave the MNF a new lease of life and it is much better for it.

I would like to see MOTD do the same thing, move on everyone that is currently on the show and give it a relaunch with some new pundits who are in touch with todays game.

It was pretty bad although the Premiership on monday was quite good. They had a fan from each team there each week sat next to the fan from the team the played.

Also had players as guests, thought it was quite a good format.

Don't remeber their Saturday night coverage, was young back then and out on the piss every Saturday.

40k a show?, imagine what Lineker is on?. Hopefully all the victims of that sicko Saville sue BBC into oblivion. No one should have to pay to watch a channel anyways.
