What will be enough points to get us up this season.

With 10 games left, what should we be seeking as a minimum return for the team’s efforts? I’ve had a look at the tables for the past 17 years (before that there were only 22 in the league for a while, and so 42 games a season).
Rather than looking at what the winners and 3rd placed teams’ points were I’ve taken the points of the second and fourth placed teams and added 1 point. This, in my opinion, gives a slightly better idea of the points required to get the championship or promotion, but of course does not take into account goal difference.

    So...
In 15 out of the last 17 seasons 89 points would have been enough to win the championship. In the other 2 seasons 93 points were required. The average points required to with the championship was 86, but that would have been enough in only 11 of the 17 seasons. The least number of points needed to win the championship was in 2008-9 when 80 would have been enough. However in that season Bury finished fourth on goal difference with 78 points, and Gills went up by beating Shrewsbury in the play-offs having accumulated 75 points and finishing 5th.

As far as automatic promotion is concerned, 85 points is the most that would have been required, and 80 would have been enough in 13 out of the 17 seasons. The average is 79. In 10 of those 17 seasons 85 points would have been enough to win the Championship.

Of course we all know that what has happened in the past is no guarantee of what will happen in the future, but on that basis I reckon that 85 should be the immediate target. And looking at that purely statistically, that’s 1.6 points a game. Our average for the season so far is 1.917, and if we maintained that average we’d get to 88.

But.... that’s only numbers, and we all should know that football is no respecter of statistics, and what price a title decider at Burton?

The way the other teams are playing I calculate that 82 points will be enough. 81 probably, 80 possibly.
This means that we need 13 points from 10 games. Champions with perhaps 85 points, or 87 if we win away against a top team like Burton or Cheltenham.

Rotherham have the easiest run in, so it was good to see them come unglued today. And if we had Burton's home record we'd be 19 points clear now............if only eh??

We needed Rotherham to lose as I feel that they will be our main threat, they will finish top 3, I would be shocked if they don't.

The most points a team apart from us can get is 91 from port vale and 90 from rotherham, and thats if they win all their remaining games which is virtually impossible. We can get 99. I reckon we're nailed on as champs and as I've been going on about for months ,we'll confirm promotion on Easter Monday.

whats the betting we start winning at home but start losing away? which will still be enough, 12 more points will see us up.

Yes I agree 4 more wins and we will be promoted in my opinion and 6 wins we will be champions but 5 will probably see us through. I think we will maintain our 2 points a game average until season end so my guess is we will get 89 points. I know we have 3 away matches which on form is no concern so I reckon by the time the Gills are next at home we will have 75 points and sufficient for a play off place and if other results go our way 2 wins from being champions!

Yes I believe you are right 2 wins in the next 3, I have a feeling Exeter will be very hard so if we drop points we should not worry as we will win the next game.

It's seems like everyone is just content to stumble across the line this year. I wouldn't be surprised if the only change in the top 7 now is positions tbh. With us port vale and an other in the autos. Who is that comes down stumbles the least
