In keeping with my album coice it has to be Black Sabbath, Hull City Hall, Jan 1971 - it was a truely great concert of it's time. Deep Purple (ABC) and Kinks (Brid Spa) about same period come close. Then I discovered Tamla and Soul, more women, more dancing, more . . . Still crack out a canny The Snake when let loose near a Karaoke - had the Newcastle Packet jumping on many a Satday afternoon!
Genesis Invisible Touch Tour NEC 1986 - Whitney Houston NEC 1987 - should have been Deep Purple Hull City Hall 1970 but they didn't turn up (Jon Lord supposed to have hurt his hand ffs) - left 2000 fans very pissed off.
Pretty certain I saw them well after that, but may be wrong on timing, but deffo ABC and they had bouncers on who stopped any dancing - Deep purple walked off in protest and the ****ers backed down - great night, great dancing, so maybe they got their stripes back!
And there was you wishing it was her vocal chords no doubt ? Just kidding mate...I'd also heard The Who themselves wanted the Hull concert to be the one released, but they were overruled by the production team...
Leeds U Union , IMHO, was the best venue for music throughout the 60's & '70s. Probably still is in the musicians minds...I was lucky enough to be there from '65 to 'early '73....mostly got in free, but most I ever spent was about 7 bob. Still trying to access archives from the '65 to '69 era....trip planned to coincide with City's last 8 games this season.....
Adam Ant @ Victoria theatre Halifax last January, place was shaking. Velvet Revolver @ Leeds Uni Carson @ Sheffield great band that never made it. Oasis @ Sheffield Worst gigs Black Grape Happy Mondays Stone Roses all awful live.
Please don't remind me about that one. I was really looking forward to it on my 19th birthday until my workmates took me out and I got right royally pissed, so much so that I couldn't stand, never mind get to Brid - absolutely gutted though my mates thought it was hilarious. Anyway, seen quote a few excellent concerts but probably the best two locally were Dr Feelgood at Spring Street (absolutely packed but a fantastic gig) and The Housemartins at The Tower. There was a real musical buzz around Hull at that time and it was definitely 'of the moment'.
prodigy was ****ing awsome live
Can't believe I forgot to mention this 'un before - The Verve @ Roundhouse in London back in 2007, near enough straight after the reunion. Absolutely brilliant.
U2 in 2001 for the Elevation tour was magical. Seen the Flaming Lips twice. Both times I walked out of the venue thinking to myself it was the greatest night of my life. Seen Springsteen several times and he's always terrific. Elvis Costello in 2004 was terrific. Little chat between songs. Just grabbed a new guitar and kept playing. Saw Alt-J Tuesday night. I think they're from Leeds. Anyway, they are quite good and give me hope for new music.
Guns n Roses at monsters of rock festival Donnington park 1988, also on helloween, megadeath, David lee Roth, kiss and iron maiden but when the first few notes of "it's so easy" belted out the whole of the 107,000 crowd went f*ckin mental and I mean mental. Unfortunately two poor buggers got crushed to death but I've been to many many gigs since but nothing has topped that since for sheer excitement.
Got to be Saxon / Eagle has landed tour @ St Georges Hall, Bradford around 82 I couldn't hear properly for about a week after that. Fu*king awesome night Also saw Marilion around 83 / 84 at the marquee. That one was a very close second.
Anyone see Ride back in the day? I'm not into bands re-forming but they are one band I'd love to see re-form. If only Andy Bell would understand Beady Eye are ****! There's a lot of psychedelic and shoegaze stuff coming back into music which is only a good thing imo.
If only that **** Liam would understand, then we wouldn't have to endure that band's ****e... Noel and his High Flying Birds are far superior.
Missed this...750 quid q ticket plus airfare from Canuckland....bugger....last time I saw 'em live was at Leeds U Union in '66 or '67. Like a good wine...matured brilliantly...like most of us old farts ! http://search.yahoo.com/search?p=cr...&fr=greentree_ie1&ei=utf-8&ilc=12&type=937811
