A bit of a stretch, one of the most successful bands between 1995 and 2005 would probably be more accurate.

Does it matter how long a band was together?

I mean, Joy Division were only around between 76-80, yet people still think they're a big band, and they have cult status.

It doesn't matter how long a band is together, I was just making a distinction between being a big band for a while and being one of the biggest bands ever.

I don't think that Oasis qualify as the latter, they've sold about 50m records, which is obviously big, but it doesn't get them close to the 'biggest ever', even The Spice Girls sold 75m records. I loved Joy Division, but I'd be amazed if anyone claimed they were one of the most successful bands ever.

    Yeah true.

I meant cult bands for Joy Dividion, not on the scale of Bieber, Spice Girls, One Direction and all that ****e.

If it's just about numbers of albums sold then

    Thriller - Michael Jackson
    Back in Black - ACDC
Dark Side of the Moon - Pink Floyd

Shania Twain and Celine Dion have both sold far more than Oasis

I said 'one of the most successful bands ever' as far as I know Celine Dion and Shania Twain weren't bands.

    In Ireland? :emoticon-0112-wonde

They've sold 50m records, same as Oasis, not enough to make the list.

I've never even heard of him, but apparently in the US, the only people to have sold more albums than him are The Beatles and Elvis.

    That is correct.

As for that list its hard to argue with. Nothing around today compares sadly.

I like The Killers - Kings of Leon - Snow Patrol - Kasabian of recent bands but they are hardly in the big league or ever will be.

I can't pick a top 3, my favourites change all the time. A few i always end up coming back to are:

Frightened Rabbit - Midnight Organ Fight. All their albums are great but they're yet to top this one. They deserve more attention.

Interpol - Turn on the bright lights. Interpol have lost their way but this is a classic.

Idlewild - 100 Broken Windows. All of their stuff is great but this along with 'The Remote Part' is probably their peak.

The Twilight Sad - Forget the night ahead. Really dark Scottish band who don't get enough attention.

Editors - The Back Room. Another band who lost their way.

The Cure - Disintegration. My personal favourite but all their albums are excellent.

Killing Joke - Absolute Dissent. I'm a big fan of them but i find their newer stuff is better than the old. Their last 4 albums are perfection.

Olivia Newton John's sold more records than The Doors, The Who, Tupac, Nirvana, Aretha Franklin & Bob Marley. Never expected to see that.

No David Bowie on the list. Surprising that.

This has really surprised me, i thought he'd be top 20 or so. Anyone heard his new one? I'm quite liking it after a couple of listens.

Yeah, they streamed it on his official website a couple of weeks ago, it does takes more than one listen to 'get into', but once you do listen for a while it's a cracking album.

Still doesn't beat The Rise And Fall Of Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars, for me anyways. (I wrote the full name so nobody can have a go)

Haha Justin Bieber. He's had a mare this week.

Walking round London in a gas mask, trying to get a family moved in a restaurant, being a twat backstage and coming out for his gig late, meaning half his audience had left before he came on stage, his fainting on stage publicity stunt and then to top it off starting on a Phil Mitchell look-a-like.
