Liverpool come into the match in 7th place on 42 points, while Spurs are in 3rd place on 54 points. This will be the 164th time the two clubs have met. The first meeting came on Boxing Day in 1894 when Liverpool, who had been established just two years earlier after a dispute with Everton, played a friendly at Tottenham Marshes in a game won 3-0 by Spurs. A further visit from Liverpool was even less successful in Easter 1895 with Spurs winning 6-0. The first Football League meeting between the two clubs took place at White Hart Lane in November 1909 with Spurs winning 1-0 thanks to a Bert Middlemiss goal. He became the first Spurs player to score against both Merseyside clubs. The reverse fixture that season was won by Liverpool 2-0 at Anfield, which had previously been the home of Everton before their move to Goodison Park. All 139 League meetings played to date between Spurs & Liverpool have taken place in the Top Flight of English football. Tottenham's 2-1 First Division win at Anfield in March 1912 would be their last at the ground for 73 years with the jinx finally being broken by a Garth Crooks goal in 1-0 win in March 1985. The first FA Cup meeting came in the 5th Round in March 1968 and resulted in a 1-1 draw at the Lane. Liverpool won the replay 2-1. To date, the clubs have met 7 times in the competition with Tottenham's only win coming at Anfield in the 6th Round in March 1995 when goals from Teddy Sheringham and Jurgen Klinsmann earned a 2-1 victory. The teams first met in the Football League Cup in 1972 and have played 7 times in the competition with Spurs winning four games with two draws. Liverpool's only win came in the 1982 Final at Wembley which was won 3-1 after extra time. Steve Archibald put Spurs ahead but Ronnie Whelan's brace and a goal from Ian Rush ensured that the Reds lifted the silverware. The teams contested the Charity Shield in August that year with League Champions Liverpool beating FA Cup Winners Spurs 1-0. Liverpool are one of three English clubs Spurs have played in European Competitions to date - the other being Manchester United and Wolverhampton Wanderers. Spurs beat Liverpool in the 1973 UEFA Cup Semi-Final 2-1 with a brace of goals from Martin Peters but a 1-0 win to Liverpool in the second leg at Anfield meant that the Reds progressed to the Final on the away goals rule. Two matches were played in Swaziland in June 1984 reulting in a 5-2 win for Liverpool and a 1-1 draw. In December 1985 and January 1986 the clubs met in the Screen Sport Super Cup - a competition played due to English club's being barred from European competition - with Liverpool winning both matches 2-0. Both Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur were founder-members of the Premier League in season 1992-93 and are two of the seven clubs who have been ever-present in the competition for the past 21 seasons (Arsenal, Aston Villa, Chelsea, Everton and Manchester United are the other five). The home fixture at White Hart Lane in November 2010 resulted in a 2-1 win for Spurs. Liverpool went ahead just before halftime with a goal from Martin Skrtel but Spurs came back in the second half with an own goal from Skrtel after 65 minutes and an injury-time winner from Aaron Lennon. The reverse fixture at Anfield in May 2011 proved to be the UEFA Europa League decider with Spurs winning 2-0 with goals from Rafael van der Vaart and a Luka Modric penalty. The game at White Hart Lane in September 2011 was won 4-0 by Spurs with goals from Luka Modric, Jermain Defoe and a brace from new loan signing Emmanuel Adebayor. Liverpool had both Charlie Adam and Martin Skrtel sent-off. The match at Anfield in February 2012 finished in a goalless draw, as did a tour match played in Baltimore, USA in July 2012. Tottenham beat Liverpool in November 2012 at White Hart Lane 2-1. Aaron Lennon put Spurs ahead after 7 minutes and Gareth Bale added a second 9 minutes later from a free kick. In the second half, Bale deflected into his own net after 72 minutes. Liverpool have won 17 of the 41 Premier League matches played so far with Spurs on 13 wins and 11 games drawn. Overall, Liverpool have the upper hand over Spurs with 73 wins to 49 with 41 of the 162 matches played so far drawn. please log in to view this image Full History of Liverpool v Tottenham Hotspur Matches 1894-2013 please log in to view this image They Played for Liverpool & Spurs.... Good article THFC going to be a very interesting game at the weekend. Both teams in decent form with two players on fire in Suarez and Bale. Any remote chance of us catching Spurs went with our defeat to West Brom and yesterdays result confirmed what most of us had already accepted. As I said at the start of the season I thought Spurs would have a stronger year than Arsenal and ourselves so I'm not surprised by that. On paper this should be a really close contest. Two keepers in good form, defences that aren't exactly water tight but full backs who like to go forward, midfields with differing qualities, Spurs physically stronger especially with Dembele in there (who I thought was excellent yesterday) but Liverpools with plenty of energy and (if Hendo plays) and some new found trickery with Coutinho and the obvious threats up front of Suarez, Sturridge, Bale and Defoe. I worry about the height of Spurs from set pieces and obviously the pace on the counter attack but fair to say we aren't short of pace now either and in Suarez we have a player who can rip any defence to shreds. I think it will simply come down to who takes their chances (statement of the obvious). Should be a good game either way
Hi lads, Not looking forward to this one either. (we've got some v tough games!) You guys have looked like a different side in the last couple of months and this could be a real banana skin for us. - Especially as we have Inter on Thursday. Couple of potential injury concerns for us now as well. Dembele being the main one if he's out, I think we'll struggle, big time. But, we've got results recently, despite not playing that well. I think there will be a fair few goals in this. Defensively I think we'll cause you problems, but we'll have the same issues at our end with Suarez and Sturridge, IMO. - They seemed to have developed a good understanding and Suarez is just unstoppable. - what a player. should be another great game between the 2 sides
Excellent OP. Nice bit of effort THFC. Really looking forward to this game and am interested on how BR plans to deal with Bale as he's 9 for 7? Spurs got a bit of fortune at WHL and I'm hoping the ball falls for us in this one if it that close. Of course I'd prefer a tonking for the spurs but I'll take a lean mean 1 0 any day.
Cheers! Spurs are now on the longest unbeaten run in the club's history during the Premier League Era (12 games with 8 wins and 4 draws). We've also amassed more points (54) after 28 matches than in any of our previous seasons in the Premier League. Gareth Bale has scored 7 goals in our last 5 consecutive Premier League games and 10 goals in our last 10 matches. Oh... and André Villas-Boas has the best record, statistically speaking, of any Spurs manager since the club joined the Football League in 1908. Anfield is always a difficult place to get a result and with Liverpool playing some very good football recently, no-one is under an illusions about how hard Sunday's game will be. I'd gladly take a point if it was offered now but I think with a bit of luck Spurs might just edge it by the odd goal in five.
We've been mean this season, just that when we concede we concede a few. So it's all or nothing Reina has returned to excellent form, his last performance will serve him well in this one, the confidence in him has returned, not so sure of those in front of him. Like I said, you'll get no goals or 3
Should be an interestin game, lasts yrs game at Anfield was chess like from both sides hardly any chances at all, the normally aggressive full backs of both sides both sat back behind the half way line. I think LFC at least will approach it different can see BR wanting to make it as high tempo as poss, with Spurs playin Inter 3 days b4 match, think Spurs will play counter n try n nick a winner, I expect they may rest 1 or 2 key players v Inter as they will see this as more important Will be surprised if fit if our side isnt Reina Jonno Carra Agger Jose Downing Gerrard Lucas Hendo Suarez Sturridge
Agree with the team, Coutinho to come on in the 60th minute to replace Hendo or Downing. Hopefully Sturridge will definitely be fit
could go either way, AVB may want to show Chelsea they could have won honors with him still in charge there and they was wrong to get rid of him, so may go all out for the Europa (hopefully anyway) i cant think who is still in it but i should imagine Spurs main threat will be Chelsea in the comp if they get passed Inter, so could be to our advantage hopefully.
Should be a good game. Think Spurs will win, and I'd take a draw right now. Sorry. However you never know. Bit afraid of what Lennon, Bale and Defoe could do to Carra unless he's 100% on his game. --------------Reina Johnson--Carra--Agger--Enrique -------Lucas-----Henderson ------------Gerrard--------- -----Suarez--------Coutinho -------------Sturridge-----
Very nice thread, nice bit of objective journalism. This is a very hard game to predict. Spurs and Liverpool both playing very well. For me, if we can get 3 oints in this one it really is showing that we are progressing nicely, but definately not a certainty. Hoping that the game against Inter for Spurs will have an impact on the legs for Sunday. As with all Liverpool fans (presumption) id like to see us play the following: GK: Reina RB: Johnson LB: Enrique CB: Agger CB: Carragher CM: Lucas CM: Gerrard CM: Henderson RF: Suarez LF: Coutinho CF: Sturridge
