    Hardly hit and hope.

Class goal from a class player.

He was also involded in their second goal

Hes wasted on their bench, although he only has himself to blame.

I am sure it will all be part of Platini's plan to get the English coefficient down so that we only have 3 teams in the champions league!!

That's a bizarre comment. Since when did you have to get the ribs for it to be a red card? Broken arms are part and parcel of the game now?

Having seen it many times again, I'm still of the opinion that it was a very poor decision. At best incompetent, possibly highly dubious. The vast majority of pundits and ex referees agree that it was a yellow card, at worst. Except Mr Keane, of course. But then he seems to have a personal axe to grind with Fergie.

I understand your upset Luke, but the red card was CORRECT, and NOT a dodgy decision, no-one but no-one has said this, so imo have not spotted Nani's little 'kick-out' right the end of his travel...watch it again, there is only one angle that shows it, but its the one the ref would have seen. Nani did NOT pull out when Arbeloa came into his view, imo he followed through pushing his boot out slightly in his typically impetuous fashion, he didn't pull his leg down, he kept it up there, seen it all before with him.

You'd also adopted a more 10 behind the ball approach before the s/o, so you only have yourselves to blame.

Oh well, Spurs win at OT...then so does Modric...funny how things can go against you.

The media support for you lot is laughable, Spurs end up with 10 men twice in our campaign, and as I said nobody gave a toss...as long as we don't upset anyone at OT though eh!

Notso, if the red card was a decision was 100% correct, no one would be talking about it at such length. Nani has not kicked out at the end of his leap. It's only a split second before he makes contact with the player, that his head turned and even realised the player was there. It's high, it's dangerous, but that motion all happened so quickly. There's no time in that instance for a player to think to themselves "i'm gonna purposely stud him here". Any reaction (if at all)from Nani, would have been more of a reaction to being startled that the player was there. - At which point the natural reactions of the brain would take over.
You can't raise your boot that high in football, but it was my no means intentional. there just wasn't the time to make it intentional even if he wanted to, as he was looking in another direction watching the ball, for far too long.

Whether the decision was right or wrong, it's frustrating to go out so narrowly, Smart. Had we got tonked in both legs, it would be easier to come to terms with. As I said earlier in the thread, Varane was crucial for them. Had he looked as wobbly as he did at times at the Bernabeu, it might have been a different result.

Watch it again Roo, look for the action I describe is all I can say, I am absolutely staggered nobody else has seen it, so I cannot tell you why nobody else is talking about it. Well I can, they're focusing on all this no intent, not looking...all bollox.

I totally disagree with your description on contact. Yep Nani saw him late, no dispute, BUT, when you do realise a player is there you would relax from the knee and withdraw as best as. He did not, his leg extended into Arbeloa still, slightly I agree but thats enough and it was the view the ref would have seen.

    Rules of the game:

    Sending-off offences
A player, substitute or substituted player is sent off if he commits any of the
    following seven offences:
    • serious foul play
    • violent conduct
    • spitting at an opponent or any other person
    • denying the opposing team a goal or an obvious goalscoring opportunity
by deliberately handling the ball (this does not apply to a goalkeeper within
    his own penalty area)
    • denying an obvious goalscoring opportunity to an opponent moving
towards the player’s goal by an offence punishable by a free kick or a
    penalty kick
    • using offensive, insulting or abusive language and/or gestures
    • receiving a second caution in the same match
A player, substitute or substituted player who has been sent off must leave the
vicinity of the field of play and the technical area.

The only two that could apply in this case are, serious foul play or violent conduct. Violent conduct is hardly feasible as he was trying to play the ball so we are left with serious foul play.

    My opinion:
If you are intent on making contact with the player that's foul play if however you are attempting to play the ball it is not. In this case you could, on the same basis that ref has made this decision, equally caution the Madrid player for making contact with a player to prevent him from controlling the ball. All red cards should be subject to revue as they have such a big impact on a game.

The sin bin idea mentioned is a good one IMO because at least the consequences of a poor refereeing decision are mitigated.

Mate, you are talking to the masters of frustrating football matches Luke! I do sympathize in that respect, its gut wrenching when things don't go right. However you scored first and their body language was not good after that, but you did not press that advantage, I think it was a poor decision to sit on what you had at that point, its not your style, may I remind you what happened in first half at your place v us!

I have mate, and I've looked again since reading your initial post.

These things happen in a split second. If we could time the point where his head turns and recognises Arbeloa, to the point where he makes contact, I bet you're talking about less than 1/2 a second. Reaction time is about 1/3 of a second, so any chance of him registering that he needs to pull his leg out just wouldn't have happened.

anyway, that's my opinion of it and i feel it's a yellow card. I'll end it there, as our opinions are very different :) <ok>

The reason Nani had his foot up is not in question, no intent, looking at bringing down a high ball. He then makes contact chest high, but does not withdraw his leg, he follows through. Its the next bit thats damning aswell, trying to fool the ref with a fake injury of his own, which he recovers from miraculously when realises a card is coming out. the ref is seeing all this, no attempt to get up and apologise to Arbeloa for the accident (as he is claiming) surely you would in this instance.
