Liverpool come into the match in 7th place on 42 points, while Spurs are in 3rd place on 54 points. This will be the 164th time the two clubs have met. The first meeting came on Boxing Day in 1894 when Liverpool, who had been established just two years earlier after a dispute with Everton, played a friendly at Tottenham Marshes in a game won 3-0 by Spurs. A further visit from Liverpool was even less successful in Easter 1895 with Spurs winning 6-0. The first Football League meeting between the two clubs took place at White Hart Lane in November 1909 with Spurs winning 1-0 thanks to a Bert Middlemiss goal. He became the first Spurs player to score against both Merseyside clubs. The reverse fixture that season was won by Liverpool 2-0 at Anfield, which had previously been the home of Everton before their move to Goodison Park. All 139 League meetings played to date between Spurs & Liverpool have taken place in the Top Flight of English football. Tottenham's 2-1 First Division win at Anfield in March 1912 would be their last at the ground for 73 years with the jinx finally being broken by a Garth Crooks goal in 1-0 win in March 1985. The first FA Cup meeting came in the 5th Round in March 1968 and resulted in a 1-1 draw at the Lane. Liverpool won the replay 2-1. To date, the clubs have met 7 times in the competition with Tottenham's only win coming at Anfield in the 6th Round in March 1995 when goals from Teddy Sheringham and Jurgen Klinsmann earned a 2-1 victory. The teams first met in the Football League Cup in 1972 and have played 7 times in the competition with Spurs winning four games with two draws. Liverpool's only win came in the 1982 Final at Wembley which was won 3-1 after extra time. Steve Archibald put Spurs ahead but Ronnie Whelan's brace and a goal from Ian Rush ensured that the Reds lifted the silverware. The teams contested the Charity Shield in August that year with League Champions Liverpool beating FA Cup Winners Spurs 1-0. Liverpool are one of three English clubs Spurs have played in European Competitions to date - the other being Manchester United and Wolverhampton Wanderers. Spurs beat Liverpool in the 1973 UEFA Cup Semi-Final 2-1 with a brace of goals from Martin Peters but a 1-0 win to Liverpool in the second leg at Anfield meant that the Reds progressed to the Final on the away goals rule. Two matches were played in Swaziland in June 1984 reulting in a 5-2 win for Liverpool and a 1-1 draw. In December 1985 and January 1986 the clubs met in the Screen Sport Super Cup - a competition played due to English club's being barred from European competition - with Liverpool winning both matches 2-0. Both Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur were founder-members of the Premier League in season 1992-93 and are two of the seven clubs who have been ever-present in the competition for the past 21 seasons (Arsenal, Aston Villa, Chelsea, Everton and Manchester United are the other five). The home fixture at White Hart Lane in November 2010 resulted in a 2-1 win for Spurs. Liverpool went ahead just before halftime with a goal from Martin Skrtel but Spurs came back in the second half with an own goal from Skrtel after 65 minutes and an injury-time winner from Aaron Lennon. The reverse fixture at Anfield in May 2011 proved to be the UEFA Europa League decider with Spurs winning 2-0 with goals from Rafael van der Vaart and a Luka Modric penalty. The game at White Hart Lane in September 2011 was won 4-0 by Spurs with goals from Luka Modric, Jermain Defoe and a brace from new loan signing Emmanuel Adebayor. Liverpool had both Charlie Adam and Martin Skrtel sent-off. The match at Anfield in February 2012 finished in a goalless draw, as did a tour match played in Baltimore, USA in July 2012. Tottenham beat Liverpool in November 2012 at White Hart Lane 2-1. Aaron Lennon put Spurs ahead after 7 minutes and Gareth Bale added a second 9 minutes later from a free kick. In the second half, Bale deflected into his own net after 72 minutes. Liverpool have won 17 of the 41 Premier League matches played so far with Spurs on 13 wins and 11 games drawn. Overall, Liverpool have the upper hand over Spurs with 73 wins to 49 with 41 of the 162 matches played so far drawn. please log in to view this image Full History of Tottenham Hotspur v Liverpool Matches 1894-2013 please log in to view this image They Played for Spurs & Liverpool.... Your usual (Raheem) sterling effort, THFC6061. Nice to see Paul Stewart making his inevitable return.
My thoughts on this game: Its difficult to know which Liverpool are going to show up. When on form they are a tidy looking outfit. Signing Sturridge has reduced their dependence on Suarez (gutted we didn't go for him personally) and Coutinho looks to be a fairly good addition as well, to my surprise. Add to that Gerrard's return to form and fitness this season and I think its clear that in a purely attacking sense, this is the strongest Liverpool side we have faced for a number of years. Where they are let down, like the Arsenal side we just played, is in defence. Reina has had a sharp fall from grace and is now error prone and indecisive. Carragher and Agger are in exactly the same boat. If we are going to win this game we need to exploit their defensive frailties repeatedly, I get the feeling they are particularly vulnerable to the counter attack, which is what we do best. I can see them scoring a couple of goals at least, despite the good form of our defence, they've had some easy games recently so confidence will be high. Prediction 2-3 to us, just.
I'm believe it or not a touch concerned as to why Bale skies sitters from 3 yards out,he's done it twice just recently and to win this match we need him to turn up and big time. WY you say that Reina is a weakness but he made three good saves against Wigan but the fact that that lowly team forced three saves means that as you say their defence is suspect. I'd go for a draw more likely than a win but push to shove a one goal win to us. Liverpool have been inconsistent all season and I still feel a defeat will bring them to a jarring and permanent halt for the rest of the season. AVB won his 28th match and against Arsenal too which means he's crossed the line with a massive victory,I see our unbeaten run being extended this weekend. If we get a good result against Inter then our morale will be high for the Liverpool clash. This is a very interesting match at the moment as both teams stand.
Cheers 6061 I actually think this could be a real banana skin for us. Liverpool are a totally different side than they were at the start of the season and are scoring a lot of goals. They've got their weaknesses which we can certainly take advantage of, but the concern is who we've got fit? If Dembele is out, I think we could struggle in the centre of the park with our creativity, and it's an area that Liverpool have really improved. We've also got to play inter on Thursday, which'll be another tough, exhausting match. We can beat Liverpool, but for a few reasons, i think this will be our toughest game in a long time.
District, why you're on this thread on the Spurs board at this time of the morning on a Monday baffles me. Why aren't you on your own board,is it boring? This thread is about Spurs and Liverpool so do you have anything to post on this subject instead of posting bloody useless comments about me?
Easy there TMT, I just wanted to pop in and say Good Morning. With regards to the game I'm not really too sure what to say as I'm unsure of the fitness of Adebayor and Dembele, and there is the small matter of Inter Milan in between. I'd make Liverpool firm favourites for this one though.
M Dembele 4 days E Adebayor 4 days C Dempsey 1 wk T Huddlesto'e TBC S Ranieri 8 mths As shown on the Physio Room so looks not too bad for Dembele & Ade but Sandro 8 months
Looks like we could be without him for Thursday then? It's when Moussa isn't playing that we'll all realise just how important he is. anyway, back to the thread....
I hope he plays Lloris,Ade doesn't matter. He seems out of place at Spurs but I'd certainly put Holtby in. For me the more players with European experience the better against Inter. This is why I'm quietly confident about these two fixtures,we have a European manager with European experience,it can only be good for us. Just say good morning then District and take your mind off me.
Apologies accepted. Keep to the subjects though. You're quite knowledgeable about football, for a Chelsea supporter.
Tough game, i get a feeling we might get beaten and queue the "Spurs are gonna bottle it" comments again. There is 1 stat that we should look at though, Liverpool have beaten just 1 top half team (i believe) this season, and that was Swansea playing their 2nd team before the cup final. They're putting average/poor teams to the sword but they're not beating anyone good. Do we know the ref yet?
Looking forward to this, my second time going to Anfield, last time was our 2-0 win with goals from Rafa and rat face. Liverpool have looked really strong lately and similar to us with Bale, they have a player in Suarez who's looking impossible to stop. Team I'd like to see: Lloris, Walker, Dawson, Vertonghen, Ekotto Parker, Dembele Lennon, Holtby, Sigurdsson Bale (free role, not as an out-an-out striker) Bench: Friedel, Caulker, Naughton, Gallas, Livermore, Carroll, Defoe Don't want Adebayor in the squad, though it looks like he may have picked up an injury anyway. At Anfield it's going to be really tough, a draw will be a great result, a win will be fantastic. I bought the ticket's for my cousins' birthday so I'm hoping the lads deliver him a proper birthday present, going for 2-1 Spurs. Bale and Sigurdsson our scorers. COYS!!!
We should prioritise this game over the Inter game, in my opinion. As much as we always say we want to take the Europa League seriously the Liverpool game is an excellent opportunity for us to dampen Arsenal's morale further by going 10 points above them, if we lose then the Arsenal game counts for little and they'll have a much needed boost in their chances for top 4. I'd play the same side that beat Arsenal for this game, unless Defoe's fit enough to start, and rest Dawson, Vertonghen, Walker, Dembele and Bale for the first leg of the Inter tie. We've got the likes of Gallas, Caulker, Naughton, Carroll and Holtby who can come in for them so whilst it's a bit drastic, we're not replacing them with crap players. Plus Inter I'm sure will be making plans for Bale, it might be quite interesting to see what they do when he doesn't start.
I'm sorta with you, its unfortunate that the first leg is not away. If it was i would definitely rest players and aim for a "solid but unspectacular" performance in Milan and bank on us doing them at WHL. With Arsenal not playing the gap will still be 7pts even if we lose. Its a tough call, luckily its up to AVB and not me.
I will be surprised if our 11 , IF FIT , isnt Reina Jonno Carra Agger Jose Downing Stevie Lucas Hendo Suarez Sturridge thats the team I would pick and I think it will be the one BR would go for too. What will your 11, I suspect you will play strongest 11 minus about 3/4 v Inter, with 3/4 squad players in there And then play your best 11 v us,as you see the PL as the priority Last yrs game was chess, with neither side sending there normally attackin full backs over the half way line too much Think this yr we will be more attackin, and use ur game v Inter as a reason to play a REALLY high tempo, think u may play counter attack and try aqnd nick a gola like that or via a set peace
