Im looking to get a guard dog for my parents, as they've had a couple of break ins in the last year. My Dad's 72, and my mums 9 years younger so there getting on abit. Ive had to move back in temporarily just to give my mum some piece of mind. It is however inpractical for me to be living there the whole time. They live out in the country, and there are quite a few gypsy site's around, and there closest neighbour is about 200m away. So they are quite voulnreble, particularly at night. I'm just really wondering if any of you guys own any big dogs, and can recommend me a breed, that is easy to train, and will deter any potential intruders. The dog also needs to be good with kids, as the grandchildren are there quite abit. My parents did use to have a collie until she died a few years back, so they do have some experience on how to train a dog. Though I'd prefer to get them something that's abit bigger than a collie. Thanks for any advice in advance!
House near where I used to live had a bulldog. Travellers nicked it! The police found it when they raided a traveller site in Harlow. http://www.edp24.co.uk/news/harlow_...n_major_operation_at_travellers_site_1_398456
You could do a lot worse than a Dogue De Bordeaux. They are incredibly loyal to their families and make for terrific guard dogs. In fact, it was because of these traits that the breed was almost wiped-out during the French Revolution when they laid down their lives protecting the aristocracy from the mob. Here's "Elvis"... please log in to view this image ...he'll do exactly what you ask him, so long as he thinks it's a good idea.
I was thinking about one of those, but If they can't be trusted with kids, then there to much of a risk
Just googled them, and they sound like an absolute nightmare to train http://www.beardogs.org/kbds/owning.html
It isn't always aggression, that sees a dog killing a baby. Dogs pick up there own pups with there mouths, so they can do the same to baby's not realising baby's aren't made to be picked up like that. That's why I'd never have any dog if I had a baby in the house
I know a few blokes at the moment with 4-8 week old baies and i suspect they'd jump at the chance of owning a dog just in case..........
I remember the story, they ripped the baby to shreds. I don't have anything against rottweilers or most dogs, but you can't risk having any dog like that around kids.
