It does seem that there isn't a practical place for it to go, the only place that would seem big enough(and central) is where the cruise ship terminal was proposed and this is still too much of a walk from the city centre(fine for a cruise terminal, but not for a tourist attraction you want people to walk to). It's a pity there's not a bit more room around the old ferry jetty, it's the ideal place and it would have the marina at one end and the river at the other, but it doesn't look like it would fit(not without causing an obstruction at the mouth of the river). How are Edinburgh doing for space? Maybe we can fob them off with Illustrious and we can have the far more practical Britannia instead?

For an idea on size on this link there are Pics of HMS Ocean on the Thames for the Olympics. Illustrious is a couple of meters bigger in both beam and length. I know about the cost but the MOD make HMS Belfast work on the Thames and evacuation in the event of fire can be done by lifeboats, zip cradles etc. There would be no requirements above those for when she was in service. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/art...ls-Thames-armed-forces-strength-Olympics.html
Sure does. Unless of course you know someone who has a balloon or similar that can lift the 20,600 tonnes of ship out of the water because there is no other way of getting it onto dry land! Beaching the ship is also out of the question...
Surely if run correctly, it can make back the money needed for it's upkeep. Like has been said: novelty hotel, conference facilities, tourist entrance fees, gift shop etc, etc... I think the cruise terminal is proposed for the external wall of Albert Dock, so if it would fit, HMS Illustrious could go in front of Humber Quays 1? Or maybe next to the jetty next to Victoria Pier (again, if it'd fit)? ...Or third option - just off the walkway near The Deep/Victoria Dock (close to where the tidal generator is)... as seen in the pic below.
No need to lift it Geoff. Put it in place, bund it and suck the water out. I was more pointing out that none of the negative elements in your post are insurmountable. Let's push Hull with a 'can do' attitude.
If in the right hands could definitely be a viable tourist attraction tbh. The Belfast is now owned by The Imperial war museum and gets 250,000 visitors each year @ £15 a time. The souvenir shop makes a fortune too. Is there a maritime museum in Hull that could incorporate it?
There is a maritime museum located in the old Dock Offices. It can't go near there though as the Docks are filled in by a public garden and a stilted shopping centre. There's a former trawler open to the public, but that's near the mouth of the River Hull which is too narrow or the carrier, but a spot on the Humber Estuary could be close enough to the trawler. The carrier could be moored in the Estuary with boats taking people out to it. That'd be a sight.

Central Dry Dock were the "Manxman" Nightclub was berthed was the Ruscador Dry dock owned by Mr Allam. This dock is less than half the size required to berth HMS Illustrious. The longest ship I can remember in that Dry Dock was the "Bow Belle" which became infamous for sinking the "Marchioness" in the Thames in 1989 killing over 50 people. The "Bow Belle" was just short of 300ft long. The only place a ship the size of HMS Illustrious could berth in my opinion would be at the eastern end of Riverside Quay directly behind the Ice Arena. The tidal problems could be solved by building a wall around the vessel. This was done when the "Queen Mary" became a hotel in Long Beach, California. The "Queen Mary" is a bigger ship at nearly 70,000. If the Illustrious did come to Hull I would put a couple of "Buccaneers" built at Brough on her flight deck.

But that dinky battleship took part in operation overlord, the battle of North Cape where it destroyed the German warship Scarhorst, then went on to the fight in the pacific and later saw further action in the Korean War. I'm quite happy with that on my doorstep cheers
