If ever there was an article title to draw the WUMs like a moth to a flame then it is surely that. I can already hear the opposition fans- those who haven't already used up their EU controlled quotas of the word 'deluded' and the phrase 'next year is your year'- sharpening their wit to sponge-like levels.

Sergio Aguero is however a player we have recently started being linked with, so i thought I'd do a quick player profile for anyone who is interested. Besides the 'club with CL football' argument, it is quite nice to know (or it at least seems like it) that if he chose us we are at least now finally in a position to go after him.

He's a player i've followed at a distance since we were first linked with him. At the age of 17 playing for Independiente, we were heavily linked with the player, but the 23million Euros paid by now club Athletico Madrid unsurprisingly put us off, as well as possible work permit issues. Part of the reason he was linked with us was that he was apparently a Liverpool fan. A 17 year old Aguero was reported in 2006 to have said this:

"If I had to choose a league then it would be the Premier League," Aguero is quoted as saying in the Munich TZ newspaper.

"I have been a Liverpool fan for as long as I can remember and it would be a dream to play there. I watched the Champions League final and celebrated every goal as if it was for Independiente."

Since signing for Madrid he has been nominated for various awards, has won an Olympic Gold and the Europa League, has given MOTM perofrmances agains the likes of Barcelona and Chelsea and his stats are as follows:

    League Starts/Goals/Assists

    2006-07
    25/6/3

    2007-08
    36/19/7

    2008-09
    34/17/9

    2009-10
    24/12/4

    2010-11
    30/17/2

In January Spurs reportedly made a record bid for Aguero following Chelsea's 'bid' and subsequent denial. Aguero rejected the chance to join Spurs and signed a new contract but part of this new contract was a reduced buy-out clause.

There have also been (fairly solid) reports that Aguero's agent was a VIP guest against Tottenham on Sunday. The reason for this is what isn't clear. Firstly Aguero and Maxi do NOT have the same agent according to the sources i've found. Aguero's agent Bruno Satin is however part of the same agency as Maxi's agent Jurgen Milewksi. By the same token Aguero and Maxi are known to be close friends, here are their families at Christmas:

Everyone's favorite villain Guilleme Ballague 'tweeted' these messages yesterday:
"Kun Aguero has not asked officially 2 be transferred. No transfer requests exist in Spain.IT HAS BEEN REPORTED HE TOLD CHAIRMAN he wants out"

"Regarding Kun Aguero: he would cost 45m euros (plus taxes if At M refuses to sell). Interest from Man City, Real Madrid and Liverpool."

"Chelsea also like Kun Aguero. Their worry, his wages. But yes, add Chelsea to that list"

"last one of the day re. Aguero: At. M. would prefer not to sell to RM. But so far RM is the only club willing to pay his 45m buy out clause."

"Would LFC like Aguero?Of course. 45m 2 pay (plus taxes if AtM dont negotiate).Likely? Not very. Will it happen? Will it rain same day nxt year?"

Not entirely sure if that last one is some Spanish proverb, but thanks for confusing things even more Ballague. Anyway there's a brief summary of the most exciting player (in my opinion) to be linked with us so far. Yes i know it is supremely unlikely, no i'm not making a FIFA style formation with him in out of pure excitement, but given the glint in the eyes of everyone who speaks about our summer transfers i'd think maybe we can expect more than Charlie Adam. That's my feeling and since Aguero is a player i rate highly and have a vested interest in i thought people might like the lowdown on a rumor that has a bit more substance than many of those in the Red Tops.

What do we reckon lads? Marquee signing? Is this the reason why Comolli, Ayre and everybody else walks around our club with a transfer boner and why Reina has committed his future having seen the size of said boner (at least a foot long)?

There is no doubt about the lads ability and he would truly be the 'marquee' signing. Some may argue that we don't need another attacker like him but I i think we do. He's similar to Suarez in that he's versatile, can play wide and drift inwards, scores goals and creates chances.

We definately need more players like him. However, I'm sure we won't be the only team in for him and we may be priced out of a move. I'm not saying we don't have the cash to compete, but Man City or Real might come in for him with a ridiculous offer that just lowers the overall value of the deal.

There will be stiff competition for his signature and I don't think we will get him because of this very reason.

Another way to look at it is can we spend the 45m in better ways than splashing on one player? I think we should concentrate on buying a number of good quality players first and improving the squad as a whole. This is similar to how Man Utd operated in the 90's where they had a good squad (mainly players coming up from the acadamy) and then when they established themselves, they would go out and spend big on a couple of players.

Overall - I would definately have Aguero but not at the expense of an additional 3-4 players.

Maybe he would be the signing that John Henry himself makes to piss Man United off,as he's known to piss his rivals off when he feels like it.He would regard Man United as being like the New York Yankees and he pissed them off deliberately.Maybe he would be willing to do the same again, signing Aguero would reallly piss Man United off.

    KPR, that doesn't make sense.
Surely it would piss the guys at Chelsea off more?
Seeing as they are actually after his signature..

    Just a thought.

Nah it would piss United off more.
John Henry regards Man United in the same way as he does the Yankees and he would do anything in his power to piss them off.Making a huge signing like that would surely piss them off.

Surely it would only have the desired effect of pissing them off if they actually wanted him themselves??

Anyway, as someone said earlier, I reckon we need to strengthen our squad and not blow most of our transfer budget on one player (although we don't know how much KK has to spend yet). Two or three quality players would be good, more if we can afford them.

    Transfer boner. Heh.

I think us spending 45m on any player would piss Utd off, just as my neighbour buying a Ferrari would piss me off.

The fact he's a fan might count for a little, give us more of a chance than Spurs, but I agree with LFC-009 that the amount of competition would probably see him in the CL. I could see Chelsea going for the wages in a panic over whether Torres will cut it.

Have any of you heard the strong reports linking Liverpool with a £20 million bid for Eden Hazard. Its not the usual suspects like Caughtoffside,Its the Liverpoo Daily Post are running with it.According to them,Liverpool have made a ''formal bid''.
Imagine if we signed Enrique,Hazard,Young and M'vila out of transfer funds and then signed Charlie Adam and a striker and a centre back out of sales.
Another report suggests that Konchesky could be Fulham bound as Carlos Salcido wants to return to Mexico.

Marquee Signing indeed. Imagine a strike force of

    ---------Carroll------
    Aguero---------Suarez

I don't thing the price would put the owners off (the same owners who shelled out 35m fo Carroll with a few days thinking time). I don't think it'll happen though, I think Aguero will play another year for Atletico. Still, no harm in dreaming. <ok>

Hazard would definately be a marquee signing for us. Will give us another dimension to our attack and hopefully supply Carroll.

I don't see the need to buy Adam, I'm not a fan. He stands out at a small club (no disrepect to Blackpool) and he struggled in the SPL (which is hardly the most challenging league in the world). He will attempt Hollywood balls and one might come off and then MOTD will only show the one completed pass. He doesn't track back and looks immobile.

M'Vila would be a better choice as CM/DM. Younger, stronger, more physical and looks composed on the ball.

I think the most important quote in the whole of this article is: "I have been a Liverpool fan for as long as I can remember and it would be a dream to play there. I watched the Champions League final and celebrated every goal as if it was for Independiente."

He's a Liverpool fan, he's a great attacking player and he can play Left or Right wing as well as CF. So if there's matching bids from Man City, Chelsea and Us. Then who's he gonna choose?

    Suarez---Carroll---Aguero

This could literally be the best strikeforce the world has seen, although it's impossible to tell until they all play together.

    Make it happen Henry!

I would take the whole "I'm a Liverpool fan" with a pinch of salt tbh. He's a proffessional footballer and will go to the club who will pay him the highest wages and guarantee him CL every year. The fact he has a soft spot for us is great if it comes down to him choosing between us or Spurs, but if Real Madrid come knocking then we really don't stand a chance.

Torres was a "Liverpool fan" supposedly (before he lost his way, I'll put this down to the Chelsea witchdoctors messing with his mind) which helped us nick him over Man Utd.

I would love Sergio Aguero at Liverpool. Will it happen though? I'm not too confident. Suspect he will stay at Atlético Madrid for at least another year. Football is a strange game though...

Whats wrong with making signings to piss Man United off.Lets give them a taste of their medicine. For too long when it came to signing at the top table, they owned it.Ferguson broke the transfer record 11 times since 1986.
They can't do it anymore due to their debt,so why not rub their noses in it.Actions speak louder than words,so let FSG flex their muscles.

    So that's Liverpool's new 5 year objective:
    'To piss United off'.
Never mind being successful ourselves, just focus on annoying the rivals.

DAVID PLATT has urged Manchester City fans to change their mindset by putting local bragging rights to one side and thinking instead about the big picture.

I think a lot will depend on what your transfer budget is. If you only have the £50 million that was mentioned in the media when Dalglish signed his new contract, I can't see you blowing 80% of that on one player when you already have three perfectly good strikers (including Kuyt) and need to strengthen in other areas as well.

And don't let the whole "Liverpool fan" thing fool you. Last year when Chelsea bid for him he said Chelsea were one of the top sides in Europe and it would be a dream to play for them. Seems like he just wants to make a good sound bite for whoever he ends up at, like most footballers nowadays.
