I think Mick said that there was something wrong with the database but he could not fix it as he was in the air. But he was honest about it and did fix it asap. This is better then anything the Beeb would do. The numbers tell all and i get the feeling most are happy here, and those that arent will find the door eventually.

I saw Mick made comments about database errors and his visit to India. This type of failure will always happen when nothing can be done quicly. Even the company I work for has, with the managers words, off shored some services to India. I do not know why as we do not understand them and them us and we waste lots of time.

Shame in my opinion. JA606 only came online a couple of days ago....

I much prefer the set up there and they are going to bring in all the functionality of the old 606... bit by bit.... they have worked so hard to create the infrastructure.

I am surprised by the strength of feeling some are expressing... as if it is <erm> treachery ;).... to suggest something different.

Anyway time will tell.. I will watch ja606 with interest...

    <ok>

I just find ja606 a bit unprofessional in looks. where as this is a lot cleaner and more professional. I like the headers and the backgrounds along with the options to change everything. Also the minimal moderation is good on here os most of us have no need to swear frequently but on the occasion it is justified its not offensive. I have to admit that i was dubious at first, but after peering in a few times i was converted and now i am hooked.

i think the truth is, they are very different sites...and ja606 is more what we were used to, but for most of us, now that we have been here a while, we're used to here and we like it. Personally, i don't care where we are, as long as we stay together. There's no point in spreading our net too wide...imho

I think if ja606 was created a couple of months ago and suggested then, most of us would probably have gone there... I think most people are happy here and to make another en-masse move would just be a bit of a pain! The site does look pretty good and the closest to the BBC that I've seen, but I htink with a few tweaks here, this will mroe than suit out needs!!

To be fair to this sites administrators, they have listened to us and brought improvements and new ideas(like the phone app thing, like the new improved database)!
IMO they have done nothing to upset us ,everything to help us set up! Then left us alone to get on with it! which I think is Ideal!
I certainly cannot be bothered to keep swapping and changing sites ,if that happens we will lose people on the way,and I`m against losing even one of our number!

I agree Norway - however like Ak I registered to see wha tit was like but also have not received an e-mail to activate the site - they are not serious players if they cannot even automate new member signings

Speaking with a lawyer's head on, I would question how long JA606 will last. To me it is a complete rip-off of the 606 design. Now that may be no bad thing but I would be surprised if that design was not protected by Intellectual Property laws. If it is, and they have not obtained a licence from the Beeb, it won't last. Unless they have the money to pay a licence arrangement?

I guess my point is, before rushing all over there and taking time to register etc it may be worth seeing how it goes. For what it is worth I actually prefer this site to the original 606.

YOu are right Bradley - I doubt BBC would allow such a close copy as if they ever did want to re-activate they would be compromised

Yep mirrored by many other sites though Yorkie!
I think Bradleys dad has a very valid point and would imagine that if the beeb saw ja606,it would raise copyright issues!
Do you know if the owners of ja have bought any such license to negate any possible legal threat!
I also think Leo is right ,if the bbc in the future want to re-activate what is there property , I see probable legal issues there!

    The Beeb won't reactivate.

They might replace 606 in a couple of years, when they finally get a grip on the knock-on effects of closure. But if they do, they'll completely redesign and rebrand.

Not so sure on that NNW, why waste money creating something you already have?

ahh its the beeb ,wasting money a specialty, I see what you mean now!

    Exactly.

The old BBC news website design (the one they had until recently) was simple but fantastic. The new one looks nice, but at the cost of navigation. In some areas looks are almost everything, but news is not one of those areas.

i have scrolled through the ja606 info pages:

    here is one admin posting:

"Our priorities at the moment are trying to help people who can't activate their accounts. Hotmail and a few other email providers are bouncing our emails or putting them in spam folders!

We need to get our server upgrade in place ASAP. If the site goes down please be patient. Our site traffic is incredible and quite a bit more viral than we first anticipated! We are serving all our static resources off the Amazon S3 cloud, and our site is still creaky, which lets you know just how intensive the site activity is!

We hope the BBC give us the AOK for the reuse of their smileys, if not we will need to look at an open alternative.

Then we need to get the different types of article creation working"

fairly similar to old admin postings here then:) That is one good thing here ,they do let us know what is going on! and are approachable!
or if we have a question we can ask Leo to relay the question!
This site is far from perfect ,but is getting there and listening to our input!
Wfc forums is established and has some good features too! However for now I will stay here and have the occasional lurk at wfc forum!
