Piran in Slovenia. It's like Italy, but without all the ****ing English tourists. Marrakech, Morocco. It's like the Old Testament! Vicarage Road, Watford. It's exactly like North East Italy...,
Very true, I had many a great day out as a kid on the boating lake at Thorpeness, followed by fish n chips from Aldeburgh
When I was a kid I lived in Bramfield, I used to love cycling to Dunwich or Southwold! In Dunwich, a few of us would go looking for Coypu, and run like hell if we found one, wheresa Southwold, we'd go on the pier loaded with ha'pennies and get loads of tipped woodbine from the gaming machine, I was so adept that I would empty the machine of ciggies! Happy days!
And you ended up supporting the Budgies! Dave I read somewhere today that Weston-Super-Mare is THE divorce capital of the UK! Is this true and have you found out from experience!
Norfolk born JWM, both parents from Norfolk but Dad's work took him to Bramfield when I was 4 years old, left home at 16 years and 4 months and have been in several locations around England! I am twice divorced, first time in London, second time in Lincoln! I've had five near-misses of a third wife but woke up just in time with each one!
I miss the days of riding bikes or honda C90's (crunch box hog) through the woods. Of being chased by the farmer for stealing apples from the orchard. Of stealing toasting forks, sausages, potatoes and tin foil from home, going to the playing field and stoking the fire the day after bonfire night and going home all black and too full to eat sunday dinner. Of getting my feet wet because I would always go too deep in the river and it would overflow my wellys. Of playing in the world war two bunkers that litter the countryside around Saxmundham. Would you let your child go out now with a tent, fishing rods and bait, ride eight miles from their home for an over night fishing session on the beach, cos that's what I used to when I was thirteen? I could ride anywhere up to fifteen miles or more like it was nothing, happy days.
That place is always so busy in the summer, the queue coming out of the shop and around the corner and down the street!!!
I did Cologne & Koblenz many years ago very picturesque along the Rhine, remember it being spotlessly clean. I have some relatives that live in Western France, half way between La Rochelle & Bordeaux, lovely part of the world just a shame about the French.. I have had some great holdays in this country, Cornwall, Devon, Yorkshire, Lakes & West coast of Scotland. I did a footy tour to Amsterdam when I played for Willis FC......that was equally picturesque...!
Koln (Cologne) is indeed a nice place. Went out that way a few times from 'Dam for Summer Jam, one of europes biggest reggae festivals and found it also to be very clean. Also stayed at St Goar along the Rhine, right in the middle of castle and wine territory, beautiful. Man that river runs fast.
I found Parma to be quite nice too. A traffic free town centre and you can't beat eating pizza at an outside restaurant with you guessed it, parma ham!! I'm not so fond of major/capital cities, the residents always seem to have a chip on their shoulder. London, Madrid, LA and Paris spring to mind. This was true in Amsterdam to a certain degree. True Amsterdammers think that if you're not from Dam then you are a boer (farmer). Thankfully Dam is so multi cultural that there don't seem to be too many true amsterdammers who still live in the city because they've moved to the suburbs like Alsmere.
Fairplay to you mate I was reading this article about the high divorce rate in Weston Super Mare and I immediately thought about you! They put it down to families who move there to start a new life and then things not working out ultimately ending in divorce!
I have done the "Bordeaux run" a couple of times right through from the northern fringes of the city (Margaux) right up to Le-Verdon-sur-Mer, jump on the ferry back over to Royan...
With everything that's written on this thread that's the best you could come up with? Your standards are slipping Weighty.
No one seems to have mentioned or beautiful great capital city! London, along the thames at night is awesome, especially when you have the likes of Big Ben and the houses of parliament all lit up. London is an awesome city, and very underrated by us English. And don't forget, there's also Tooting Broadway....ah, the memories!
