Moments that stand out for me in League 1. Great feeling to build a team from scratch of some of the best players in the lower leagues. Winning the JPT. The MK Dons comeback. Beating Oldham 6-0. Beating Brighton. Plymouth Away and Walsall at home. The Man Utd FA cup game too. The Championship. First game of the season beating Leeds 3-1. Then winning 5-2 at Ipswich. Jos scoring against West Ham in both fixtures. Beating Leeds at their place thanks to the SKD show and a brilliant volley from Rickie. Millwall comeback. And of course the final day of the season launching our return to the PL. We've been spoilt!
Was Jim Magilton still there back then? I agree with all this, it has been a good experience for Saints I think. One outcome I think is that Saints fans don't fear the effects of relegation in the same way as we did when we were last in the Premier League.
I remember just after Forte had scored a brace against MK Dons, I left to go over my mate's house. Another one of my mates was there, who isn't that into football, and when I walked in, said: "It's 2-2! Fonte's got both of them!"
Reading this, there is nothing to add. We have been spoilt. Many, many football fans do not experience the joy we have had in a lifetime, let alone in 3 seasons! Markus...Thank you
I hope we never take such joy for granted...don't want to be like ManU fans who seem to sulk a lot when things go wrong, as if they've been cheated.
I remember we all thought Arsenal fans were very much taking their success for granted when they won the FA Cup in Cardiff, 1-0. They hardly made any noise, and many of them left even before the presentation of the Cup. Saints fans stayed all the way through and applauded both teams. These days, I must say that Arsenal fans seem to be putting up with the absence of trophies very stoically. Perhaps it's because they weren't that fussed in the first place.
Remember that...We sang 'Cheer up, Cheer up, You've won the FA Cup.' Papers said the next day that we were the best fans ever to lose.
I must say that run of high scoring wins in L1 will take some beating, 3-1 was a particularly popular and the 5 we put past Hartlepool and Huddersfield were very satisfying. Spoilt? Totally! Also that cold midweek victory against West Ham was a great atmosphere. The scoreline doesn't really reflect how ordinary we made them look. Also, driving up towards London on the M3 on JPT final day and seeing all the flags and stickers on the cars. Seems like nobody was allowed to drive that day without one!
Plenty already mentioned; Some others Under Pardew - Bristol Rvrs away 1-5 and Morgan scoring a cracker for his 1st ever goal Walsall & Huddersfield back to back home wins. Never seen saints string two such dominant displays in a row. Fonte & Jaidi bossed it. Under Adkins; - goals v Pompey. Obviously the results did not follow but always a great rush. Leyton Orient A; Similar to Plymouth, but lots of saints fans nearly out numbering the home fans to watch Barnard add another vital win. Crystal Palace A; Memories of Dellhurst park and taking us to the brink of the premier league.
Peterborough away in the Championship. Really had a feeling we'd slip up, got there and everyone seemed so relaxed we made it look easy and finally convinced me we were going up.
Yeovil and Brentford in L1, Ipswich, Leeds and Pompey away in Championship. Pompey is a strange one I know but any game with your rivals when half my street see me on tv supporting the better red half will always be a fond memory
I went to more away games when we were in league one and had a great time at Huddersfield, Leeds and Sheff Wed despite some of the results. Great to mingle with opposition fans, no aggression down there, only in the Premier League.
Went to my first Saints match (Millwall away) when we were in league 1 so that will always be special for me...away trips to Palace and Millwall last year were very special as well
I'm going back, way back, to the good old Pardew days. For me there is one game in particular that I remember, because I was convinced we were gonna get beaten, but instead we absolutely destroyed Huddersfield 5-0. Okay, so they went on to get the playoff spot, but that game showed me for the first time in years that Saints weren't any longer the predictably disappointing shower of ****e that I had gotten used to. I think I lost a bit of "the fear" that day. The 'old' Saints became the 'new' Saints.
Yeah that was good, also for the whole 10 goals in 4 days thing with us beating Walsall 5-1 in the game before.
Remember that one, quite well at least - I'd had a few Brothers Festival ciders beforehand and 5 goals looked like 10 with 44 men on the pitch!
Brighton Away was a season changing game, had we lost that I don't think we'd have been promoted that year. I think it was Easter weekend, it was barmey weather and like many I was listening to the radion in the garden thinking "wow, this is it we're going up". Not a specific match, but I also have very fond memoires of playing on Tuesday nights ... great to have a football fix early in the week.
