A good and honest response, Secret.

My personal experience of the Oil & Gas industry is that, to a greater extent than any other sector that I've encountered, it can make the unexceptional individual very rich and very powerful. There have been so many people in there that have earned enormous sums simply because they have been prepared to travel, work and live in some pretty ****ty places on this earth. Of course such sacrifices deserve reward, but the quality of the person and the skills required to do the work have been, with some exceptions, average. As the individual has grown richer, so too has he become more full of his own importance and more deluded as to his own abilities.

Gordon Gekko in Wall Street said that a fool and his money are lucky to get together in the first place: this is never more true than in the O&G industry.

Don't be too impressed by these people, Secret, you too can succeed; just be prepared to re-locate at the drop of a hat, perhaps surrender 5-10 years of your life (which will fly by, believe me) and you cold be as big an arsehole as I am.

Strangely was talking to my missus last night, I've always wanted to move to the states but for some reason Calgary seems really attractive both work wise and women wise !

My last job was at a famous auction house In London and they didn't have a pot to piss in, at this gaff I find myself placing orders of 20k plus just for 2 or 3 pcs

Strange the amount of money these oil firms throw around

Plenty of jobs in the (over & Underground) mines out here where you can start on $200K pa.
Loads of fly in/fly out deals and massive incentives to go there.

Average truck driver is on $140k starting rate.

You should get a visa Secret as I'm sure you have plenty to offer skills wise and dont have a criminal record. No way in if you do mate!

This is the money that we're all forced to pay at the pumps and for our heating and for our electricity, Secret. Forget OPEC, there is a worldwide unofficial cartel amongst all the oil producers allowing them to make eye-wateringly substantial margins to pay all these Mr Unexceptionals. Whilst there are now many national oil companies, supposedly to better serve the interests of the people of the countries with natural hydrocarbon resources, they still rely enormously on the oilfield service companies to drill and produce the oil and gas. It is the executives of these businesses that are doing very well indeed. Governments remain reluctant to tax these businesses further because they can simply charge the NOCs and international oil companies even more, which is then passed down to the forecourts.

Your spot on uber, if you ask me I'd rather the oil firm had my money than some dodgy bank, i
But I'm bias and to be fair they are both as bad as each other

The us government approved the takeover of our company last week by the Chinese state oil firm (there's a clue there) 15 billion and in cash lol

Given the choice, I'd rather I had my money, Secret.

If you get the chance to live and work abroad, Secret, I recommend you grab it. I wish that I had.

Me too - I really liked geography in grammar school. I sailed through 8 "O" levels, but due to strong peer pressure for "A" levels I wrongly chose Chemistry (which I did like), Biology (hated disecting animals) and Math. I should have chosen Geography, History and Economics all of which I excelled at.

As a result of these poor choices, aged 18, I really messed up my "A" levels and ended up working four years for a geophysical survey company, working all over the world conducting seismic surveys in deep sea marine environments (Norway, Scotland, Spain, Portugal, Malta), shallow marine (hovercraft) operations in Saudi Arabia and also land operations (desert) in Saudi. Quite the gig at that young, travelling the world, all expenses paid, all kinds of extra hard living expenses, huge bonus if you "shot" above expected miles of seismic line, and no income tax paid unless you spent a certain amount of time in British territorial waters. Also reallly liked working hard, continuous operations for two months, then having one month paid leave off.

I ended up being sponsored by the company to take a diploma in Land Surveying at North East London Polytechnic (sandwich program - Field > School > then back in Field to put into practice what you learnt in school). Eventually I came to British Columbia, Canada to work in a land surveying office, then to university where I studied Surveying Engineering, Science (Geology) & Arts (History/French). So I ended up with a degree and a very well rounded education and work experience and I now work in IT as a business analyst. At almost 60 with 5 kids, I sometimes miss all those exotic field operations of my youth.
