Rangers and Newcastle plan game for Paul Gascoigne

RANGERS are in talks with Newcastle United to arrange a fund-raising friendly to help stricken legend Paul Gascoigne.

The former Rangers star, 45, is in rehab in the USA for alcoholism.

Football stars have rallied round to try to provide the funds to pay for his treatment. And, in a meeting with the Sydney branch of the Rangers supporters club, Ibrox chief Charles Green revealed he wants to play Newcastle – Gazza’s first club – before the start of next season.

Newcastle owner Mike Ashley is also an investor of Rangers and Green has discussed the idea with him.

Green said: “ I will be looking to arrange a game with Newcastle to raise funds to support Gazza – a Rangers and Newcastle legend.”

Hopefully someone will say to Gazza... 'look son... get yourself fit and you can play a half for each side'.. it would be a good motivation tool as he loves both clubs.
I'm there 100% if it comes off.

Be a great send off for him if he did turn out for both sides. Make it even more memorable and appeal to both sets of fans.

It would be a great gesture, but I fear Gazza is now beyond help. Such a sad tale.

Everything Barton said on twitter about the whole money for Gazza thing going on was absolutely bang on the money, and the same thing applies to this. Especially in the case of Rangers and Chuck Green who currently are grabbing at any shameless profile raising opportunity going.

    Just my tuppence like

Would like to see him go for a real cause like money for Gaza :p <seewhatididthere>

Agree - met him a few times when playing for the reserves and just breaking into the 1st team.

Once after a reserve game, I bumped into him the car park and he offered me and a mate £50.00 from his YTS wages to go over and deck the referee after he'd sent him off for two yellows. <laugh>

Definitely daft as a brush but one of the nicest blokes you could ever wish to meet.

Did the ref press charges or did you get him from behind?

Nah, he was a big bloke and we were only about 13 at the time - definite discretion being the better part of valour moment <whistle>

Sorry, bit of a cr*p end to the story, but there you go - used to chat to his mam on the bus on the way home after a game.

She had Billy Whitehurst staying with them as a lodger at the time - couldn't really see that happening these days could you?

Nice gesture, all the efforts people are making are a nice gesture. However we've been down this road several times before and end up at the same juncture. Its like Nile Ranger behaving like a twat. Inevitable!

Wish the bloke the best, he could have been the best in the world of his era if he wasn't so touched mentally. Fine line between madness and genius. Yeah its a sad tale, yes its an illness, but pity can't be endless regardless who you are and what you've done.

    Nice idea.
    Remember the Ibrox tournament?
Went into a bar and a ManUre fan tagged on. He was 'advised' to leave whilst he could still wal!
    Nice people!
We all left as a result!
Sadly, tribalism never seems to go - even when its for a good cause.
Went to Ayresome Park for a benefit match for 3 girls knocked over by a drunk. The trolls came round looking for Toon/Mackems - who were sitting together! Scum!
