Film and DVD thread

The new one, by which I am guessing you mean the one with Tom Cruise in, is actually pretty good. Good effects and keeps largely to the original story (In the important aspects). Having said that, I do prefer the original from way back along with the brilliant double CD of Jeff Wayne's version

 

To be honest the special effects on the original War of the Worlds were rather poor but at the time they were considered incredibly good and revolutionary.

 

Yeah, you couldn't make out the wires that were holding the space ships in the sky

 

I should add at this point perhaps.............we get most, if not all of the new DVD's here long before you lot do in the UK and do a monthly run to buy a dozen or so of the new releases.

Well into my boxsets - Breaking Bad, walking dead, the wire (I you didn't ever watch it, worth an investment), American horror story (although not watched the second series yet) - all very good for me.

My flatmate was in band of brothers - didn't mention it until we were watching it over Christmas - as if you forget to mention that.

If you are a fan of band of brothers, I'd recommend The Pacific - an absolutely brilliant watch...

 

edit - and a hell of a lot cheaper. I think a brand new DVD here at the market where we get them is about £1.00 and they are not dodgy copies either!

 

To be honest, I just want more Will Smith and Damian Lewis!

But I will certainly invest in the Pacific.

The ninth episode of Band of Brothers was just scary to be honest.

 

Once got a pirate copy of Harry Potter Chamber of Secrets. Badly edited with small chunks missing but the subtitles were hilarious!

Hagrid once referred to showering with snails!

 

The vast majority, and I am talking 99.9% here, are good and actually play on a UK bought DVD player, which never fails to surprise me. Not complaining mind

 

I don't really do modern Sci-Fi, only the classics. My all time fave is 'The Time Machine' with Rod Tayler. Special effects are dated to say the least, when the nuclear bomb goes off in the sixties it's so obviously a model it's laughable. Doesn't take away the enjoyment though. I also like 'The Blob' and 'Quatermass'

There is a war film that I've struggled to find which is 'Hell in The Pacific' with Lee Marvin. There's just him and a Jap on an island during the Second World War. If memory serves me right, the're unaware that the war has ended and the're still trying to kill each other !

 

In terms of sci-fi, I quite the modern Doctor Who but its got poor recently.

 

Got it and it's fantastic - Atomic satellite zeroing in and the model car falling in to the river of Lava All the same I love it

 

Agreed, after series 5 I have found it hard to follow as they appear to have lost their way. Need to bring back the Sea Devils and have lots more Daleks & Cybermen

 

I like Matt Smith (studied at the the UEA) and is a good actor but not as good as David Tennant.

That is something they have always got right, all the way back to the 60's - got the 'right' Doctor at the right time, just the story lines begin to fail after a while. The last three, Chris Ecclestone, DT and not MS have been excellent

 

ah, happy days

 

This was the best of recent time and certainly appeals to my liking for something different but in this case close enough to home to make you wonder "what if?"

A very well written episode that was.

Also loved David Tennant's last two episodes with Timothy Dalton, John Simms and Bernard Cribbins.
